Current VS/T-mobile customers, were you able to upgrade to a T68(i) through VS's "handset upgrade" program?

I've been a VS/T-Mobile customer for just over a year now. When I noticed the T68 a few months ago, I began looking at purchasing options. First I call VS to see if they offer it--no dice. At that time, I wasn't "eligible" for a handset upgrade (looks like you have to hit your 1yr anniversary before you can upgrade thru them). Argh, so then I began watching eBay auctions....until I finally see the T68 on VS website! So I run down to my local retail store, only to find out that they sell it TO NEW CUSTOMERS only. I would need to call customer care to see about pricing/availability for myself, a current customer. But I've still not been a member for a year, so technically I'm not eligible for an upgrade. At any rate, so I call back the other day (finally hit my 1yr anniversary) and ask the guy if I can get the T68. He talks with the "handset upgrade department," and comes back and tells me it's not available. Great....looks like I missed the very small window when they were offering this phone.

I'm just curious to know if anyone successfully upgraded to the T68 through VS's "upgrade department." I realize I can go out and buy this phone on eBay for $200-300, and actually for $50 (after rebates) on Amazon.com if I cancel my existing service and sign on as a "new" customer. :-) However, I was hoping I could get this phone from VS for much less $$ (than eBay) and without the hassel (of signing up as a new customer). Thoughts? I've been really pleased with VS/T-mobile service in my area (Memphis, TN), so I really don't feel the need to find another carrier. I just want a damn T68! Thanks
