I have been searching and reading some old threads, from what I gather Verizon is CDMA and on a 900? or 1600? setting? I am tired of my phone, and most of the phones verizon sells locally or the radio shacks, all suck. I love the phones some other companies use and I am just trying to find out which ones I can make compatible or where I can buy some unlocked versions that are compatible so I can buy a new phone and activate that one.

You'll need to find a phone that uses CDMA technology and operates on the 800 and 1900 MHz frequencies. Other major companies that use compatible phones are Sprint, Alltel, US Cellular. Keep in mind that you can't just take a Sprint phone (for example) and use it on Verizon without bypassing the carrier lock on the phone that is designed to ensure that the phone will only work with the provider that sold it.

Are you a fan of Nokia phones???? I am and I am looking at the 6585, you can get them on ebay unlocked, it is small, color screen, IR port, and speaker phone and FM radio built in, MMS ready, pretty cool phone all around. The one thing is that it does not have an external antenna, so if you are in a low signal area, it might not do as well as other phones. Check it out on Nokias website, see what you think!!!! | |

The question is whether Verizon will allow you to use an unlocked phone on their network, esp. if it's one they don't sell. Unlike GSM phones (i.e., AT&T, Cingular and T-Mobile), CDMA phones have their serial numbers, called ESNs, registered in your provider's database. If they don't like the phone, they can refuse to register its ESN and you won't be able to use it.
