AT&T Wireless unveils new service plans

By Reuters
May 16, 2002, 10:10 AM PT

AT&T Wireless Services, the nation's third-largest wireless telephone company, on Thursday unveiled two new service plans that allow customers to make calls on both its wireless networks.
The company is in the midst of transitioning to a GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) wireless network from a TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) network. GSM is the dominant wireless technology standard in the world. The GSM network is an advanced version called GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) that offers high-speed Internet access, so customers can also surf the Web and check e-mail from their mobile phones.

AT&T Wireless said its new AT&T Multiband One Rate Plan includes no roaming or domestic long-distance charges for voice calls made within the United States. Monthly prices range from $59.99 for 450 minutes to $199.99 for 2,000 minutes.

Its National Network Plan requires no roaming or domestic long-distance charges as long as calls are made on AT&T Wireless' network. Monthly prices range from $34.99 for 300 minutes to $149.99 for 2,200 minutes.

The Redmond, Wash.-based company also said it was introducing a new mobile phone that can be used on both GSM/GPRS and TDMA networks. The Siemens S46 phone costs $199.99 and provides high-speed data capabilities, voice dialing, and a built-in data/fax modem.

AT&T Wireless offers GSM/GPRS service in markets including Chicago, Dallas, Las Vegas, Miami, Phoenix, San Diego and Seattle. It plans to offer the service nationally by the end of the year.

I wish more handsets were available for this plan.

Having only one choice (the S46) is not cool.

Where the weekend minutes, huh. It would have been a great plan if they gave some Nights and Weendend minutes.

I agree Dukedog. This is totally unfair. I'm quiting ATT and going to Cingular starting today.

I'm assuming these plans do come with some night and weekend minutes but they are just not stated in this article. I hope they do at least, otherwise these new plans are a rip off.
