I totally agree that so far 2.5 & 3g markets are more hype than reality. We'll just have to wait and see what happens as 2.5 & 3g networks are introduced how they will succeed. However, one thing in my opinion remains distinctly clear; the carriers who offer a nationwide 2.5-3g network while expending the least amount of resources to do so stands the best chance to gain the crucial early consumers/business users into trying out and utilizing 3g; AND at the same time if revenue from 2.5g and 3g networks is not what is anticipated the carriers who spend the LEAST amount of money will be risking a hell of a lot less and be able to absorb the slow growth easier. No matter how many press releases you post Kenny from WCDMA producers and carriers saying that their migration will be easier now etc etc.....the FACT REMAINS...overseas WCDMA carriers spent BILLIONS UPON BILLIONS of dollars just on spectrum licensing alone. go and search the web for any business articles and they all are dumbfounded by the insane amounts of money spent on wcdma spectrum licenses for a technology that is as you say all hype so far and b4 spending a penny on actually setting them up. And no matter how easy you say it is for them to roll out WCDMA the simple truth is right now they are running on GSM on one frequency and they need to upgrade a system to a totally different technology based on cdma (WCDMA) on a totally different frequency. GSM basestations are not going to do this no matter how much you may pray to the lord for compatibility. While some technological advances may allow GSM and WCDMA to work more freely side by side it is still a huge deployment effort of mammoth proportions and cost. and in THIS country WCDMA spectrum is not even opened up yet by the FCC and the article i posted seems to predict a long hard battle for this spectrum. also wcdma is not backwards compatible with gsm phones while cdma 2g phones will still work on cdma2000 networks. cdma carriers still have to upgrade their networks but they do NOT have to buy all new spectrum for this to work and their core networks which are cdma are much more compatible with the new technology they are trying to upgrade. sure some cdma carriers need new spectrum to handle traffic congestion, but that is not nearly as bad as having to buy huge licenses for all new spectrum to launch a new technology that may not produce profit for a while. also by nature cdma and cdma2000 is a more efficient technology for voice traffic numbers. While sprint may be spending a billion to upgrade to 2.5g across its whole network, other carriers have spent way more than that just on the spectrum alone before even dishing out a penny for any network upgrades. So this leads to several conclusions. 1) whether or not people want 2.5-3g services or if it is all hype, virtually all carriers are committed to this route so in my view it will definitely HELP to be one of the early birds there on a national scale and upgrading from cdma to cdma2000 is an easier migration thus (should be faster) 2) if 2.5-3g services are successful the company who spends the least on getting there stands to reap the most benefit 3) since all carriers are upgrading to 2.5-3g if it is a bust (or takes a lot longer to become a technology in demand and thus profitable) the companies spending the least resources to get there will have to absorb the fewest losses; which in this case are obviously cdma carriers. thats my 3 cents ( i reserve the right to add maybe a 4th or 5th cent if their is need ) |

Hi Id, Now that you've become and regular (and a valuable one at that), may I ask just a small favor. I have a problem with my eye sight and it is difficult for me to read long posts without any white space. I would really appreciate it if you would please add two line breaks between every 3rd or 4th sentence. I am 51 now and have been wearing glasses since I was 7. Supporting workstations and servers and then working on a computer all day, my eyes literally twitch and I get headaches reading. That's why my posts have dropped -- my eyes need a rest. Thanks. Kev |

lol no problem.....at over 1000 posts you have now slowed down? hehe...... i tend to write in gigantic long streams of consciousness run on sentences that just pour out of my brain with the randomness of misfired neurons that somehow when mashed together may start to create a semblance of order that at times starts to make sense like perhaps this one may start to make sense or perhaps its all those caramel macchiatos i drink that can do a number on ones nerves...... hehe its just the way i taught myself to write....get the ideas out on paper fast while they are still there.... then edit to a finely tuned essay (well when I have to hand it in for a grade) I'll work on my forum posting technique |

Yes, I have a work associate by the name of Michal that does the same. A real "wiz kid" but sometimes hard to follow. He also uses "hehe" often. For a second, I thought you might be him.

that is correct. GPRS speeds and 1rxtt are for all intents and purposes bedmates. also upgrading from gsm to gprs is an easy thing as is from cdma to cdma 1rxtt....my 3 cents is in regards to all upgrades after that. see the article i posted on a review for 1xev-do for more info on the cdma2000 final migration.
