Starting April 1st Cingular will be offering unlimited mobile to mobile calls on Nation GSM Plans $49.99 and above to other Cingular Wireless customers. The great thing about Cingular's MTM is its Nationwide, anywhere in the GSM coverage area. So as long as you are picking up a signal and calling another Cingular customer the MTM minutes apply!

How do they do that? I would think this is financially crippling, however they seem to be doing well. I guess limiting the areas where customers can roam helps, but they're still using multiple roaming partners. If it was one roaming partner, the volume would get them incredible rates, but I can't imagine they get such a good deal on roaming. Somebody enlighten me please. But what really helps Cingular is their business style of being broken into markets, as opposed to a unified national service model such as Sprint PCS. This means Cingular can control sales and services on a market by market basis to fit each market better, whereas a unified national model can't fit each market best. With this model, Cingular has figured out a way to setup their network to minimize roaming costs. For instance, a customer from a major city cannot roam in their home market whereas people coming from other markets can roam in that city. This means they don't offer the same roaming database to every market, which shows differences between markets.

This is not new... Cingular had unlimited M2M when I joined back in 2000.

Unlimited anything is only a gimmick, it's a way to close sales to those who do not understand how much they use a month...either people are on plans that are way over what they need or way under. I laugh at people who run out to the local carrier to get the local unlimited plan for $30-$40 dollars with a very limited coverage area....those same folks are the first to complain when they get hit with roaming. How about a plan that says okay you can have 43,500 minutes per month. |

To get to the last percentage of the population that does not have a wireless phone yet you will see other major carriers offering Unlimited Packages...withing two years their will be an unlimited price plan war that will force more consolidation in the industry.

Zaphod, did you sign up for a tdma plan or a GSM plan? When we signed up in 2002, they had no such promotion in our area.

I think the change is that Cingular's m2m is now national - IIRC it was only local m2m on their national plans previously.

Correct. Ever since Cingular was formed they never had national M2M. It was only local. This is the first time they are offering it unlimited with national coverage.

many providers do M 2 M on a national level, but only on their network. what I understand is that it is any nework you are on is M 2 M if you call another cingular person. Saw last week the ad on tv even though cingular is not here in, Utah just at&t. The ad said I need a map for coverage a map for service and a map for M 2M why so many maps. Cingular only does one map for national coverage and M2M. Yes I think they will lose money, but I think the gaining with something like this might off set it?? |
