I can remember a few years back that some carriers would not let you check your voicemail from a landline phone. I believe Cingular GSM here in CA (formerly Pac Bell) would not allow this. With Sprint I have always been able to check VM from a landline without using up any airtime minutes. Are all carriers like this today?

I can only speak for Verizon, you can check VM from a landline and no minutes will be used. Furthermore, leaving a messages is minutes free, also.

In the early days (circa 1997-1999) this was a big advantage for Sprint over Pac Bell. Back in those days many of us only had 30 to 100 anytime minutes on our plans so being able to check Voicemail from a landline was a big airtime savings.

Pacbell Wireless/Cingular did have a way into the VM system, I think. It was <AAA> ???-1234, IIRC, and it would allow you into the system to send and receive messages. "???" might have been the prefix to your wireless number - but my memory is fuzzy here - in fact I may be completely off base, so forgive early and often. |

If Pac Bell did have something like that I didn't hear about it nor did they want you to be able to do it. I remember discussing this way back on another forum and this is the first I have ever heard of that trick. I do remember the $5/mo fee they wanted for landline access (which I thought was ridiculous).

With T-Mobile you can check you vm on a land line, at least with their prepaid service.

I'm able to check my voicemail from a landline or another phone. Cingular has always been able to do that here even back in the BellSouth Mobility DCS days.

So apparently Pacific Bell in CA/NV was the only carrier with this policy back in the day?

Yeah. Here in the west coast, former PacBell Wireless (Cingular) charges for what they called enhanced voicemail which allows landline access on regional plans. With nation plans, it is included for free. I had the region plan a few months ago on my Cingular line and paid $4.99 extra to check my voicemail from a landline. When I changed my plan to GSM Nation, the rep. told me it was now included with this plan. Since voicemail is a landline service and different parts of the country utilize different voicemail platforms, I can see how there is such a variance of experiences with this. Larry, then again, we live in California. You and I know everything costs so much more here than anywhere else in the nation. We pay more for the perfect weather, huge coastline, prettier women with tans, and a more affluent lifestyle than most others. Of course, we got our ghettos (barrios) too.

Glad that Verizon lets me check my VM from a landline. I do it every day since my VMI doesn't work.

In the DCS market area (NC/SC/East TN) you really have 3 ways to check your voicemail. A. Check it from your wireless phone. B. Check it from another phone by dialing your number and hitting * and then enter your passcode. C. Dial your local VM Number. Since I have a 423-367 number with Cingular I can dial 423-367-8989 to check my voicemail from any phone. I can also plug in cingular mailbox numbers that way if I just want to leave them a voicemail message without calling them. |
