Greetings: I'll be in France (Paris) and wondered if my SonyEricsson T62U phone will work with Cingular? I've gotten two opposite responses from Cingular. Supposedly they've activated me for Western Europe, but still unclear whether my phone will work. Thanks

The pre-paid will also be much less expensive than roaming with Cingular, if you plan to make many calls while you are there.

Doing some quick searching on google, it looks like Frances used 900/1800 GSM and your phone supports 800 and 1900 GSM. So, no your phone will not work over there.

Yes, the PHONE (handset) will NOT work. The SIM will. Is Cingular giving people roaming for only certain parts of the world? I've never heard of such a thing. |

Your T62u phone will not work in Paris, or anywhere in Europe. It is on 850MHz (also called 800MHz) and 1900MHz GSM and 800/1900MHz TDMA. There is no TDMA technology in Europe, and the GSM technology is 900/1800MHz. What you can do is get a tri-mode phone (900/1800/1900MHz GSM) off eBay. Make sure it is unlocked (or SIM-unlocked). When you get there, stop at any news kiosk, FNAC, Virgin Megastore, etc. and buy a prepaid SIM. Your choices are Orange, SFR, and Bouygues Telecom. I have used Orange (still do) and SFR... bought the Orange card at a news kiosk near my apartment, on the Boulevard des Italiens (9e) and the SFR card at the Forum des Halles. Paris has 100% coverage... you've never seen anything like it in America. Even on the -3 level of the Forum des Halles, even buried in the Tully wing of the Louvre, there is perfect, crystal-clear coverage.

The SIM WILL work fine in France, when I get to work monday I'll get you the roaming rate. If you want... drop me a line at bcutler@upiwireless.com and I'll send you the .doc file with all of the International Roaming Agreements. You'll want to pick up a world phone. |

The rates for former BellSouth territory are here. Former PacBell people pay rates that are even more outrageous. Also you'll note the price list is full of errors - Andorra on "1900 mhz", Australia on 800/1900, etc.

They have been listing Orange Dominicana (Dominican Republic) as 1800Mhz for a long time, and they go list after list and have never corrected this error in a long time. Orange uses 1900Mhz over there, not 1800.

I wasn't trying to offer a comprehensive list -- I just looked a the first few entries alphabetically which is why I mentioned Andorra and Australia. But I think there's almost more that are in error than are correct.

It would be better for him to get a prepaid SIM and a cheap tri-mode phone off eBay, then get a calling card for international calls.
