i have verizon service and currently have access to my email on my V60c with yahoo through a wap tunnel, so i don't pay anything only use up my minutes. i recently bought an iPAQ 3835 and was wondering if i can connect to the internet through my phone. there is a data cable from motorola that will allow me to connect the two devices, my questions are do i need a modem for my ipaq, seems like i woiuld and what would be the best one? and would i be able to dial up to a free interent service like netzero or juno. at home I have cable modem so i don't know if i'd be able to use the same settings like ip address. etc to use my service. thanks for the help |

Yes you can use your V60c as a modem with your iPAQ. The data cable on moto's site will not connect to your iPAQ. Here are the two main sites to get the cable from. Gomadic Thesuppynet There is no way you can use netzero or juno for free when you are traveling. You have to either use your phone as a modem, which (as you said) uses your minutes. Or buy a wireless card that will fit your iPAQ slot (compact flash, etc...) from a wireless provider. There may be an adapter for your iPAQ to use a PC card (like Verizon sells), but you will need to sign up & pay for service. Click here to go to Verizon's Data & internet page. Read through all that Verizon offers in this area, it helped me out quite a bit. To use your iPAQ at home you need to set up a wired or wireless network, so you can share your cable modem between your computer & iPAQ. I believe there is a wireless compact flash card that will make the connection to the network, but the ethernet one I can't tell you for sure. I am ont that familiar with the connecting a PDA to a home network, as I do not have the need to do it. I would recommend pdabuzz.com to find out more on the subject. Click here to go to there site. This info. should get you started in the right direction. I myself am just getting a understanding on this cell to PDA subject. I have heard the best way to get help is call tech support of Verizon, or the company that you will by the cable from, or your cable company.

budney, thanks for the info. a few questions, first, did you see the link I provided to Moto's website? It looks like that cable will connect my V60 to my iPAQ, but if you see/know something I should be aware of please let me know. also, my question regarding netzero and juno is with signing up for their free (limited)service and getting dialup numbers and an isp address. since i have cable I don't have that, so I can't use my home account, i'm thinking that having netzero/juno would allow me to connect with that info. thanks again

wait....... i see, it says Compatible with iPAQ Models H3830, H3850 and H3870...it doesn't mention the 3835, but i would guess it should, of course i'll find out before if i decide to get this one. also, i think that buy using Quick 2 Net i can access the interent as a verizon customer from my home area... so maybe i won't need netzero/juno, anyway, still learning |

I didn't click the link when I posted the first time. I thought Moto just had the usb cables. I would not purchase the cable from Moto, thuogh it is nice to get OEM accessories. The other two companies I think offer better custumer service, than Moto. I can not say that for sure since I have not purchased a cable yet. I have read a few posts mentioning they have good custumer service. And I know that Gomadic will let you exchange there cables anytime you change phones or PDAs, plus they are around $20 cheaper and Moto or Thesupplynet. With your iPAQ, I know there is a Compact Flash/56K Modem that will let you contect to the internet through a phone line. But I just looked and Juno/Netzero software dose not support PDAs. You would need the software to surf with them, there software is what moniters your time spent on line. The only other thing I can think of is, the company you have the cable modem service with may offer a free or small fee dial up service. My company dose this since you can not take your cable modem with you when you travel. It is also incase you are having sevice interruptions at home. If you find out that I have said something incorrectly, please let me know. I have tried to find out as much info about cell/PDA connectivity for myself, but I have not purchased a cable to connect my V60i to my Dell Axim. The reason why is, I am dealing with a Verizon supervisor right now. And I will have to switch my V60i to a 1xRTT phone. If you have any other questions, I will answer them the best I can.

just ordered the OEM data cable for $40, should get it later this week. from what i've gathered, i should be able to connect via my cell phone and connect to verizons' Quick2Net and that will allow me interent access free of charge except for minutes used. if it's anything like the wap tunnel then i'll use it off peak so i won't use up my peak minutes. i'll post my findings as soon as i get the cable.

You should be good to go with the cable. I would definitely use your N&W minutes. I used my phone as a modem on my computer, just to check it out. It's slow (12K down/12K up) but cool. I will be sign up for the express network soon, I will let you know how it is when I get connected. I just need to figure out which plan to go with first.

Success! I got my cable today, hooked it up and was online checking email, news and a bunch of websites. connection is slow of course but not bad, especially if you disable pictures/graphics and just have text. nice to have if you're away from your computer and want to check out what's going on. i initially had trouble connecting but two things that helped me were the tutorials posted on thesupplynet.com website under downloads and specifically on the ipaq, taking out the plastic "card" from the SD slot on top. this is not a memory card, just something that is kept in there until a card is used but for some reason taking it out allowed me to connect the first time. i left it in the second time and it worked with it in. oh well, hope this helps the supply net tutorials for wireless connection Motorola S9908 - Data Cable for Compaq iPAQ (OEM) |

jedi - Glad to see that you got it working quickly. I just bought a cable for my Axim, it should be here by weeks end. Thank you for reminding me of the disable picture trick. I tested it on my regular computer, it shaved about 10 minutes and used half the bytes of the first test I did with my computer.

yeah, i'm like a kid with a new toy. listen, in case you don't know about this site, it's like this one here but for PDA's and pocket pc's, it's called PDAstreet.com. great info there. I found out where to get a free mpeg and avi media player plus downloaded some trailers(windows media player can't play these formats), really cool watching them on the go. my next thing will be to convert some of my movies to avi or mpeg, save them on a SD card and watch them on the bus ride home. I love seeing people's reaction, these things still have a lot of WOW factor in them. I love technology. PDA Forums |
