Verizon Wireless Announces New High-Speed Services

Verizon Wireless said it will introduce EvDO ultra high-speed wireless services in the Washington, D.C., and San Diego areas late this summer. The Evolution Data Only service enables wireless access to the Internet at speeds five to 10 times faster than a dial-up modem. Pricing for the service wasn't disclosed. Lucent Technologies is the equipment provider for the Washington, D.C. network. Nortel Networks is the provider in San Diego. One of the reasons Verizon is capable of offering the new service is its purchase of additional spectrum in 50 markets for $750 million. Because access to additional spectrum is still difficult for many carriers, it may take years for EvDO technology to be widely available across the U.S. Also, Verizon Wireless announced an agreement with Wi-Fi network provider Wayport, under which Verizon Wireless customers will have access to Wayport Wi-Fi networks in 475 hotels and 10 airports. Pricing for the service has not been finalized.
