In Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New York, T-Mobile and Cingular have the exact same coverage, so whichever is cheaper. Not sure about Kauai.

T-Mobile would proabely be your best bet. In the cities you meantioned I think T-Mobile, Cingular Wireless, and AT&T Wireless would have about the same coverage. T-Mobile is however a bit cheaper and I think they might have more options for international roamers. Your best bet would be to proabely get a prepaid SIM card through T-Mobile and pay as you go while in the US.
