Could you elaborate a bit more? I'm not sure if you are asking a physics or a technology question. (Or both??)

The reason for downlink & uplink to be balanced is you want the receive & transmit signal levels to be as close to the same as possible. You definitely want the uplink (from the mobile) to be as good (if not better) although some systems are downlink limited. Hope this helps |

It is a technology question. Specifically cellular systems. To put another way, If the down link is 174 dBm, then the uplink should be 174 dB - why is this crucial? Thanks. | |

To put it in plain English, a phone call is a two-way call. Therefore, it must be balanced in both directions in order for your voice to reach the network as well as the other person's voice to reach your handset. If one of the links is not equal to the other you can have all kinds of side effects, such as the person can hear you but you can't hear them and so on. So it is important the system works equally well under all conditions, near or far from the base station or inside a basement, through concrete walls, etc. so that when you hear the voice of the other person is starting to break up you automatically know that your voice is also likely to break up in their end as well.
