Exclamation Creditor Calls To Cell?

I hope this is the right forum to post my question. I received a call on my cell phone from a creditor that I owe. I was under the impression that they couldn't call your cell phone. He wouldn't tell me how they got the number. He tried to say it had been on file with them since I had the account. I said well thats so funny because actually the number is only 2 months old . Anyway, could someone tell me how they got the cell # or if its legal? Thanks so much.

A creditor contacting you by such means is not illegal. If they were "cold calling" you and your # is on the do not call list then it probably is illegal. This would not be considered a cold call as you are already doing business with them.

As far as how they got your # there are so many ways to get phone #'s now days it is hard to tell exactly how they did it. Many collection agencies use somewhat unscrupulous methods to get the information they need to contact people. I can tell you this though, We are in the information age. you can find any personal info on anyone if you are willing to pay for it.

Here is a thought. Change your number and have your account password protected and other accounts password protected as well. Make sure they know they HAVE TO ask for the password. A creditor will have your name, addy and SSN. Normally, those alone will be enough to get information. It's not rock solid secure but, having a password only you will know will help.
