Saskatchewan Proposes Cellphone Driving Ban

*I had posted a thread awhile back about Ontario banning cell phones while driving. Well now I found another article with Saskatchewan doing the same thing.*

Saskatchewan has introduced legislation that will ban talking and texting on hand-held cellphones while driving starting on Jan. 1.

The proposed bill would allow experienced drivers to use hands-free phones behind the wheel, but new drivers can't use any type of cellphones while operating a motor vehicle.

June Draude, minister responsible for Saskatchewan Government Insurance, says using a cellphone to talk or text while driving is clearly dangerous.

Studies suggest drivers who text are up to 23 times more likely to be involved in a collision than a non-distracted driver.

Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec, and Nova Scotia already have such laws on the books.

Manitoba's cellphone ban is expected to be proclaimed into law next year and British Columbia has introduced similar legislation.

Virgin Mobile Declares National Fearless Day

Virgin Mobile has officially declared November 19, 2009, National Fearless Day – a day for Canadians to say “Screw it, let’s do it!”.

Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Mobile's fearless founder, states "At Virgin we know what it takes to be fearless, whether it's racing across the Atlantic in record time or launching the first passenger space ship. Sometimes you have to stand up and face what scares you head on."

According to a national survey conducted by Angus Reid Strategies on behalf of Virgin Mobile Canada, only 49% of Canadians say they consider themselves fearless.

Some Fearless Canadian Facts:

    * Canadians over the age of 55 are the most likely to say they are fearless (53%).
    * Canadians between 18 and 34 are the most likely to claim that they are not fearless (32%).
    * This year for National Fearless Day, Canadians will be doing everything from skydiving (24%) to skiing in the buff (3%).
    * 16% of Canadians said they would hurtle themselves down a luge track.
    * 31% believe singing in public is the most fearless thing they've done (let's hope they were good!)

Cellphone Ban for Ontario Drivers

Drivers in Ontario will now be breaking the law by using BlackBerrys, cellphones and other hand-held electronic devices while driving.

Drivers are no longer allowed to talk, text or e-mail while behind the wheel, or use portable video games or DVD players.

Global positioning systems are permitted - as long as they're safely secured to the dashboard.

Emergencies calls to 911 are the only exception to the ban.

For the first 3 months police will be educating motorists to stay off the phone instead of handing out tickets. However, drivers can still be charged under existing dangerous or careless driving laws.

Beginning February 1, 2010, drivers will be facing fines of up to $500 if they're caught violating the ban.
