Demand for phones with Google's mobile OS has jumped across the globe since the start of the year, says research firm Kantar WorldPanel.
by Lance Whitney May 15, 2012 9:15 AM PDT

Android keeps boosting its global market share, according to a new study from Kantar WorldPanel, reported by Reuters.

The firm's latest research showed that Android picked up strong market share gains in most of the seven major nations around the world, including the United States, Australia, the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. The gains were measured over a 12-week period up until mid April.
Android more than doubled its share in Spain to 72 percent, Reuters noted, and almost doubled it in Germany to 62 percent. Kantar attributed the increase to new smartphones from Samsung and HTC, which continued to grab market share at the expense of RIM and Nokia.

Apple bumped up its market share in the U.S. and the U.K. thanks to the iPhone 4S, though demand was sluggish in Europe.

Microsoft is seeing some signs of life thanks in huge part to Nokia's Windows Phone-based Lumia handsets. The market share of Windows Phone more than doubled to 6 percent in Germany the past year, Reuters said. And it inched up to 3 to 4 percent in the U.S., the U.K., France, and Italy.

The One X and Evo 4G LTE are being delayed indefinitely by U.S. Customs officials over patent infringement issues.
by Steven Musil May 15, 2012 6:20 PM PDT

Apple's patent dispute with HTC reached a new level today with word that imports of HTC phones are being delayed by U.S. Customs officials.

The One X and Evo 4G LTE are being delayed indefinitely by U.S. Customs officials over unresolved patent infringement issues with Apple, HTC said, confirming an earlier report on The Verge.

"The U.S. availability of the HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE has been delayed due to a standard U.S. Customs review of shipments that is required after an ITC exclusion order," HTC said in a statement. "We believe we are in compliance with the ruling and HTC is working closely with Customs to secure approval."

CNET has also contacted Apple and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency for comment and will update this report when we hear more.

HTC was dealt a setback in December when the International Trade Commission, a federal agency with the power to enforce bans on products shipping to the U.S., ruled that HTC infringed on Apple's patent for data detection. The process allows a mobile device to recognize items like e-mail addresses, phone numbers, and addresses in text and automatically move them to a calendar, dialer, or mapping application.

T-Mobile USA to cut another 900 jobs

NEW YORK | Tue May 15, 2012 5:56pm EDT

(Reuters) - T-Mobile USA, the fourth largest U.S. mobile provider, said it is cutting another 900 jobs.

The cuts will come on top of the roughly 1,900 it announced earlier this year.

The unit of Deutsche Telekom is looking to preserve cash for investment in its network after its proposed $39 billion purchase by AT&T Inc failed late last year due to regulatory opposition.

T-Mobile USA, which is spending $4 billion to upgrade its network, said in March that it would close seven call centers, cutting about 5 percent of its roughly 36,000-strong workforce.

It had indicated at the time that it could cut more jobs at a future date.

The seven centers employed about 3,300 people. The company said at the time that it would offer transfers to employees of the shuttered call centers, as it planned to add 1,400 jobs at its remaining 17 centers.

Apple to drop Google Maps with iOS 6 debut:

According to trusted sources, Apple has an incredible headline feature in development for iOS 6: a completely in-house maps application. Apple will drop the Google Maps program running on iOS since 2007 in favor for a new Maps app with an Apple backend. The application design is said to be fairly similar to the current Google Maps program on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, but it is described as a much cleaner, faster, and more reliable experience.

*SENIORS SAY HELLO TO A NEW PAL™*

*Press Release*

---Quote---
Clarity launches easy-to-use, amplified cellphone to restore the simple joy of clear conversations

CHATTANOOGA, TN – May 14, 2012 – Clarity--a division of Plantronics (NYSE: PLT) that creates smart communication solutions for seniors—today launched Pal™, a new amplified cellphone designed uniquely for older consumers.

Pal is an easy-to-use cellphone that provides clear conversations to keep Boomers and seniors connected with loved ones everywhere they go. In lieu of unnecessary apps, Pal™ is built with features specific to the needs of older consumers such as amplified sound, large dial pad and a one-touch emergency button.

Available as an unlocked GSM phone, Pal can be purchased at Clarity® – Smart for Seniors™ – Phone Technology for the Hard of Hearing for $99.99. Pal users can sign on with the wireless phone provider of their choice.

“We created Pal for the 40 million seniors in the US who just want a clear and simple cellphone,” said Carsten Trads, president of Clarity. “Most cellphones today are intended for younger generations. While age brings wisdom, it also brings new health concerns like hearing loss, low vision and struggles with dexterity and mobility. Pal was designed precisely to address these needs.”

With 25 decibels of amplification, Pal is an ideal solution for the 36 million Americans with hearing loss. The boost and adjustable tone control buttons give users the option to customize their listening experience to their particular degree of hearing loss.

Pal features a large, 2-inch LCD color display with bright, oversized characters so users can effortlessly navigate the device. Its talking caller ID lets users know exactly who is trying to reach them. The vibrating and flashing visual ringers make certain users do not miss incoming calls. While the cellphone’s bold, illuminated dial pad with large buttons makes dialing easier, its Talk Back feature speaks the numbers as the user dials to further ensure accuracy. Importantly, Pal is hearing aid compatible

On the back of Pal, users will find a one-touch red heart button that will call and send text messages to five pre-programmed numbers, instantly connecting users to loved ones or caregivers in the case of an emergency. Pal will cycle through the five contacts until someone is reached.

“Safety is a top priority for older generations,” continued Trads. “Pal provides users with a constant, reliable connection and a way to quickly get help in an emergency no matter where they are. For seniors and their children, Pal will bring invaluable peace of mind every day.”

Pal’s navigation system offers a customized experience for older users. The zoom-in viewing for the phonebook makes it easy to call or text the correct person. Meanwhile, Pal keeps speed dialing simple with just three buttons for the user’s most important contacts.

While Clarity focused on creating a clear and simple cellphone, Pal still boasts several useful bells and whistles: nine loud ring tones, a calendar, an alarm clock, a calculator and a stop watch. For hands-free conversations, Pal features a high-quality speakerphone and Bluetooth connectivity.

“Our aging parents and grandparents are looking for a cellphone that is easy to-use so they can stay connected to their loved ones,” said Trads. “It’s calling their sister without frustration, being able to hear ‘happy birthday’ from their grandkid or simply knowing they can reach out to loved ones anytime, anywhere. These simple joys are precisely what Pal delivers.”

Pal does not require a long term contract and comes with a one-year limited warranty. For more information on Clarity, visit Clarity® – Smart for Seniors™ – Phone Technology for the Hard of Hearing.

I have TMobile Sidekick 4g's, 2 of them. In the year I've had them, several new versions of Android have come out yet TMobile, and or Samsung, have not seen fit to push updates to these phones which are currently using version 2.2.1.

This seems sort of like abandonment to me, forgetting about caring for existing customers. Is there some sort of update schedule that anyone may be aware of that TMobile may have somewhere?

Thanks.

With all the talk lately of mergers and buyouts again I have to wonder who is next. I see by the end of this year another decent sized merger taking place. Nothing huge though but a tieup worth noting. AT&T has been talking to Leap Wireless (Cricket) about a buyout and T-Mobile has been talking to Metro PCS about a merger. Sprint almost bought Metro PCS but pulled out earlier this year of making an official offer.

So whose next?

Apple Store Service- the Best

Very under appreciated is having Apple stores nearby for service.

A family member's iPhone 4S stopping working - data/internet was fine, but only one sided voice communications. Seems that the mic was not working. ATT told them to go to the Apple store. The phone was purchased in Sept/Fall '11.

The 'Genius' checked out first for water damage, then verified the problem we described. Next was a complete erase of the phone (after asking that we had backed up), to see if it was a software problem (they verified that the mic was working , by using the recorder App). I was impressed with the methodically way they diagnosed the problem.

When that didn't fix the problem, they said 'we will give you a new phone, no charge' being under warranty still. All in all, we were out in about 20 minutes, just a electronic signature required.

I am still sour at the day my Nokia failed and I had to return it to Nokia for 2 weeks, with no back up phone from ATT.

Very pleased.

Siri says Nokia Lumia 900 is the best SmartPhone ever

Nokia's Lumia 900 is the best smartphone ever, according to Siri.

Apple's Siri virtual personal assistant certainly has said some rather interesting things in the past. But to diss its overlord seems a bit much, don't you think?

When iPhone 4S owners ask Siri which smartphone is the best ever made, the obviously disgruntled virtual personal assistant responds saying it's the Nokia Lumia 900 4G running on AT&T's network. It goes even further, saying that the Cyan-colored Lumia 900 stands above all others.
Related stories

Although it might look a little odd that Apple's own service would recommend another phone, it actually makes a lot of sense. Siri looked for the answer on Wolfram Alpha, which, if users type in "what's the best smartphone ever?" will point to the Lumia 900. The high rating is delivered base on "customer review average" across the Web.

The Lumia 900 is certainly no slouch. In its review of the device, CNET offered up four stars out of five, calling it "excellent." CNET reviewer Jessica Dolcourt said that the Lumia 900 is her "favorite Windows Phone yet."

Evidently, it might even be Siri's.

T-Mobile USA customer losses continue to mount

T-Mobile USA customer losses continue to mount
By Greg Bensinger and Shara Tibken, Dow Jones Newswires
Friday 11 May 2012

Operator marks 10th straight quarter of subscriber loss with 500,000-user exodus.

T-Mobile USA reported it lost more than a half million of the most lucrative customers in this year's first three months, marking the 10th straight quarter of contract user losses.

The drop puts the carrier further behind AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless in the race to lock users into two-year commitments and could make T-Mobile's recovery even more difficult after regulators blocked its plan last year to be taken over by AT&T for $39 billion.

T-Mobile, the fourth-biggest U.S. carrier, put its strategic plans on hold last year while awaiting government approval of the AT&T deal and watched its subscriber rolls shrink. The Bellevue, Wash.-based company is the largest remaining carrier without the Apple Inc. iPhone, another competitive advantage that has hurt its ability retain users.

Chief Executive Philipp Humm vowed to return the company to customer gains."We've always said that in 2013, 2014 is when we want to be net positive" on contract customer gains, Humm said in an interview Thursday.

T-Mobile said it lost 510,000 branded contract customers in the first quarter, an improvement from the 706,000 lost in the year-earlier period, though still behind its biggest rivals. T-Mobile did lower the rate at which users leave, known as churn, to 2.5% from 3% in the fourth quarter.

The carrier and MetroPCS Communications Inc. may be holding discussions about a merger that would lead to an initial public offering of the new company, controlled by T-Mobile parent Deutsche Telekom AG, according to a report by Bloomberg News on Wednesday. Humm declined to comment on the report, though he said he is hoping to acquire more wireless airwaves, or spectrum.

Humm told reporters on a conference call Thursday that it was his goal to become a "self-funding platform."

Though T-Mobile has announced plans to roll out a high-speed mobile broadband network sometime next year, using spectrum it acquired from AT&T as part of the deal breakup fee, it will be at least two years behind Verizon Wireless in introducing the technology.

In the interview, Humm said he opposed a deal by Verizon Wireless to acquire about $3.9 billion worth of spectrum from a group of cable companies because he hoped to buy the airwaves himself."The FCC should deny the application," said Humm.

Overall, T-Mobile added 187,000 customers, due in part to a 249,000 gain in prepaid subscribers. Prepaid rivals MetroPCS and Leap Wireless International Inc.(LEAP) both both saw slower growth rates during what is traditionally the strongest season of the year.

I know that I can put my phone next to my computer's mic and record messages that way but that is pretty low tech and fraught with problems.

I'm a retired programmer, assembly language and C from before the days of Windows. It strikes me that it would be a simple matter to have a dialing program to dial the modem in my computer (yes, I still have one), access my voicemail and redirect the audio to a file. There would need to be an interface for delete, skip, etc...

For those who don't have modems some sort of internet phone service could be used to connect to your voicemail account.

Back in the day, this sort of thing would have taken but a couple of hours for me to cobble together a working model. Now? First, I'd have to learn all about programming under Windows.

The point of all of this is, is there a program out there like what I propose? If not, how about one of you bright young guys writing one?
