Exclamation Warning about Ebay fraud...

I just wanted to know that I've been bidding on a few Motorola V3x's on Ebay lately and for every one I've bid on I get a "second chance offer" by email later. In each case I've contacted the seller via the "ask seller a question" link on the auction page and the sellers have never sent any such offer. I just want everyone to remember that valid "second chance offers" will always show up in your "My Messages" section of your "My Ebay" page, and link to a special auction page on Ebay where you complete the sale. Some of the offers looked very convincing. Ultimately the one that looked the most convincing arrived in my inbox 2 hours before the auction closed!

If you do receive a fraudulent email that copies an official Ebay email forward it to spoof@ebay.com so they can work on stopping that person. Also remember that paying by wire transfer, cashier's check, or money order has no buyer protection. It is best to pay by PayPal so if you do get duped by a fraud you can reverse the charges and get your money back.

Happy and safe bidding to everyone,
Jay

A friend of mine bid on a pontoon boat and that happened to him. Weird. I guess it's very easy to spoof e-mail addresses. I didn't figure it would be. Thanks for the info, Jay.

Yes, unfortunately it's very easy to spoof email addresses, but if one looks at the full email headers there will be clues as to where and how the email got to you. Incidentally, when forwarding email to spoof@ebay.com it's best to forward email as attachment, as it preserves these headers, which is very important in tracking the spoofers down.

Also, eBay and PayPal always address you by your name (not as eBay Member or PayPal member), so that's another giveaway of a spoof.

Thanks for reminding, Jay!

Compare the headers from the true ebay email (first) and a spoof (second)

The same thing is going on with PayPal. The email that I received stated that I had a pending payment for $399 for a DVD player. I figured that this is a fake email since I hadn't had any transactions in months. I decided to log in onto PayPal in another window and I verified that I don't have any pending transactions. Thanks for the "Full Headers" tip; mine was this:

It is easy to do that. It is also possible that it is legit and the eBay users password has been comprised. I which case it would impossible to tell the difference unless you are really cautious.

Yeah, but if you pay by PayPal if the users account has been comprimised you can get your money back.

*******************EXCELLENT THREAD JAY****************

People really need to be told about these. I received this yesterday, and immediately knew it was fake because I never leave a any balance on PayPal.
In this one they ask you to click on the link and put your credit card and billing info!!

Quote:
Dear eBay Member,

We are writing to alert you that your balance is not paid, because your
credit/debit card company declined eBay's attempt to charge your monthly
invoice amount to your credit/debit card.

Your payment is due by your next invoice date.

To speed up this process, you are required to place other credit/debit
against the account registration data we have on file.

Place or update credit/debit card on file.

As a courtesy, eBay will automatically make a second attempt to charge
your card. This attempt will take place in about 3 to 5 business days.

As a reminder, past due accounts may be restricted from buying or
selling until payment is received.

Regards,
eBay Billing Department
How sad it is that many people do it and lose so much money. The FBI should be concentrating on fraud as much as pedophiles. These people are very evil!

I've been lucky when dealing with eBay so far.Only once did I received an email stating that PP needed my personal account information by the end of the week or they would have to close my account. I reported, and sent a copy of the email to PP and didn't give out any info before I did. I found out that that email was a scam after someone from PP contacted me and said that no one from their department sent that email and that if I ever needed to change or update my info. I should always log on to PP and do it from their secure site.

Steven. That's the letter that Ebay sends out to sellers. I got one when I forgot to update my credit card on file and they could not bill my listing fees to my CC. It still could have been a fraud, but it was not a PayPal scam.

I've had a big problem with this on Ebay.

There is allot of scammers out there and they will do their best to make you believe that their bid is worthy. I think allot of the ebay sellers are just trying to recoup and get a sale from someone.

The best advice is whenever you're doing one of these auctions, you need to let ebay know asap if a fraud bid comes up and also add them to your blocked section.

I don't quite understand. Are you saying that the sellers are putting up fake auctions for items they don't have?

That's correct. Fake sellers and buyers all working together to scam. Fake sells and fake buyers rising the auction.

I've seen allot of this when I tried to sell some of my old phones and fake bidders rising the price and of course when I've tried to buy a razr. I never get the item and some how the seller just happened to be from some off the wall country when in the beginning, they were located somewhere in the us.

My wife runs an eBay business full time, with over 4,000 positive feedbacks, ZERO negatives. Feedback is the first thing people should check before buying. Read the comments!!! There is also a thing called "Shill Bidding". People create fake eBay names or their friends do, and drive up the auction price if the seller feels it is too low. eBay has really cracked down on this, by watching the IP addresses of all the bids!

I was aware of fake auctions and bidders, like there was with the Ghost in a Jar, I was just trying to understand what was posted there.
