I am in Boyne City MI and I had a friend come to my house from Detroit on his ATT/Cingular Blackberry phone. He had perfect reception, 4 bars, and data usage at my house. I have VerizonWireless from Detroit and probably roam on Alltel and get NO service at all. I am looking to switch to ATT to get the coverage. I assume that the reception is on the Dobson Cellone towers that ATT just bought out, yes? If so, how can i find out what frequency he was getting? I would need to switch equipment so i don't want to buy one that is missing a frequency that i would need for the same service my buddy received. Any help? |

Yes, the signal your friend is getting with at&t is Cellular One's signal. You would need to switch over to a at&t gsm phone with at least 850/1900mhz bands, with these bands the phone will operate great here in the united states, but if you want worldwide roaming capabilities then you get a quad-band phone (850/900/1800/1900mhz) Most phones gsm phones out there today are all quad band. All at&t phones come with 850/1900mhz.

Thanks for the input. I am curious. I do not need the global capability. Is 850/1900 all i need for Michigan use? Are the 900 and 1800 frequencies used in the US at all? Wondering if a quad band (800/850/1800/1900)has any value over a dual band (850/1900) here in the US for coverage reasons when traveling inside the US ? Thanks for the input. Hope others can use the info. |

The US or Canada does not use the 900/1800 bands they are mainly European frequencies & unless you plan to travel in these countries it's not required. The majority of phones now include either 1800 with the 850/1900 or all 4 bands so it's a moot point. Again any phone you buy with AT&T or Dobson will have the frequencies you need for the US.

850/1900mhz is all they use in the US. they do not use the 900/1800mhz frequencies at all in the US. pretty much all the phones that at&t sells are quad band. I don't think they make gsm 850/1900mhz only phones, i think most gsm phones are quad band or tri-band. hope that helps!
