The big question on my mind is this: I've got the service workingm and peak at around 16k/sec (using linux and a Samsung SCH-A670 phone), but will 'unlimited nights and weekends' apply to this, or does it *always* deduct minutes?

it will deduct minutes based on when you make the connection, yes. You will be able to connect using unlimited nights and weekends. Are you usin g quick2net or Nationalaccess? I'm guessing that you may have either a very weak signal, or your software is not configured properly if you are using nationalaccess. I typically, at worst, have had about 40k/sec on nationalaccess. |

16 kiloBYTES,not kilobits, and since the port is (i believe) an emualted serial port, that's about the theoretical max anyway. As for which service I'm using? I have no idea! =] How do I find out?

Just noticed my phone's data port was set to 115200 in the prefs instead of 230400. I'll see how that performs. --edit-- no real change, though I peaked at 19k/second once during a download, it usually sat right at 15.9k/sec. It *could* be a software configuration thing, or more likely an ACM driver thing in linux. Last edited by overand; 01-19-2005 at 2:39 AM. |

I'm sure overand is using Quick2Net...how did you set your internet service up?? Anyway, I'll see in a couple days what I can do, once my USB cable arrives. |

If the data port speed is set to 115200 (default, probably), that translates to 112 Kbps or 14 KBps. Quote:
The Quick2Net advertises speeds at 14.4 Kbps or 1.8 KBps. EN should be 40-60 Kbps or 5-8 KBps with bursts up to 144Kbps or 18 KBps. Next time I'm using EN I'll pay close attention to what kind of speeds I'm getting. | ||

Oops, Sorry about that, lol, you're right, I guess I misunderstood the KBps readings he supplied |

Yes, the phone's 'serial port' is set to 230,400 (with no units listed) but I can assume that's bits per second, so ~230 kilobits or a theoretical max of ~28.75 kiloBYTES a second. I have no idea at what rate the computer is actually communicating with the phone, but 230kilobits sounds right given my absolute max peak around 19K(bytes) during a download, what with overhead and network traffic, but my downloads are almost always around 10-16 kiloBYTES a second. This is completely adequate for me, and yes, I know the difference between bits and bytes. ANd on that topic, it's common for serial port speeds to be listed in BAUD, or bits-per-second (including stop bits and other serial-line control data, so the actual data throughput is always lower than the baud rate). Anyway I don't see why 16k/sec would be considered 'slow' or why anyone would think that my system must be misconfigured if I'm getting those kinds of speeds. --edit-- ah heh no prob on the misreading. it's a lot of switching back and forth. |

If your using EN, you will be using your phone number to log on, ex. 26271907**@vzw3g.com as a user name. Quick2Net would just be qnc as both user name and password to connect. |

sry, didnt read that carefully... Comes from being a student, and needing to read through material fast. Caps don't really matter than much to me when I'm speed reading. I sorta need to fix that tho.

wgray, I sent you an email a while ago, don't know if you got it...to both of you: I received my USB cable last week, but the people forgot the include the driver's CD, now I called them back and they're sending it out by the end of the week they said. My question is: I tried to get my laptop to recognize my phone as a modem w/out the USB Driver CD installed...this isn't possible, right? Or am I missing something? Thanks again guys, Andy |

Hello, First of all, i'm kind of newbie when its time to talk about wireless internet. I just wanna know how it works.. I'll explain.. I have a laptop and I have also a cell (Audiovox CDM-8300) which got the 1X feature? Now, I bought a cable to connect those 2 things together. Let me know if I'm wrong. I don't know if you know the service providers in Canada, but I'm with Telus (www.telus.com). I'm on the "Pay&Talk" which is a plan that works with cards. I pay 25$ to get the unlimited evenings and weekends calls. All I need to do is to plug the cable and install the software I assume. But how can I connect.. Do I need to add a service to my account? You talk about Quick2Net or something. Does the phone act as a normal modem? If I already have a dial-up ISP, will I be able to dial to a local number to connect with my cell ? Does it works by minutes or data transfer? Will I get charged if Im using it only in the evening and Im on the unlimited evening calls? |
