Hey, guys. My dad has been an AT&T/Cingular customer for many years. Last year, we decided to switch to Cingular, so we could get a family plan. I live in Freeport, IL but work in Monroe, WI (about 30 miles away). For the most part, I get decent coverage in Freeport, but I have no coverage in Monroe, except for a couple of spots where I get a weak to moderate signal very, very briefly. However, when we had AT&T, we got great reception in Monroe. Does Cingular have plans to "turn on" the old AT&T towers? I've called Cingular several times, but they can't seem to tell me when there will be coverage in this area. Thanks for your help.

The AT&T phones you had may have been TDMA. Looking at Cingular's street level maps there doesn't seem to be any GSM service, nor partner GSM service available in/around that area. For service in this area I would try CDMA service like ALLTEL or U.S. Cellular.

Thanks for your advice, Andy. If I did switch carriers, I would probably go with U.S. Cellular. And I believe you are correct about the AT&T phones being TDMA. However, I'm still a bit confused as to why Cingular isn't taking advantage of the AT&T towers that are in Monroe and the surrounding areas. It was my understanding, when talking to the Cingular CSR's, that when AT&T merged with Cingular, the same towers and/or carrier agreements would be used. Is there a way to find out if Cingular/AT&T still own towers in the area? Also, can't Cingular use the AT&T towers with their GSM service? Please forgive my confusion. I'm just a bit frustrated. Thanks a ton. |

There are no AT&T towers or Cingular towers in or around the Monroe area at all. Alltel has one tower in Monroe and one tower in the middle part of Green County. USCC has towers in every town in Green County, I think they have 11 or 12 towers in the area. Nextel also has a tower in Monroe and one in Brodhead. Sprint has a tower in New Glarus. If I were you I would go with USCC hands down as they work excellent around here. Alltel is very spotty and as for Cingular, they just plain don't have any service at all. Another option would be Verizon, as they use USCC's network in this area as part of their extended network.

USCC'S previous digital standard was TDMA (before the current CDMA). Perhaps you were roaming on USCC with your ATTWS TDMA phone? ATTWS made a lot of roaming agreements to create the original nationwide coverage plans. COtech
