Default 1 year vs. 2 year contracts

What are the pros and cons in your opinion of having a 1 year or 2 year contract?

I think that 1 year is good because if for whatever reason you are not satisfied with the phone or service, you can opt out of it and not be stuck for an additional year. The only advantage I see with 2 year is that you usually get a bigger markdown on the phone and the activation fee is waived.

What are your opinions/findings and what type of contract do you opt for?

Yeah I agree with that... The phone I bought would have been a whole $30 less expensive.($80 as opposed to $50) BIG deal right?

That is what I thought

Personally, I would never sign a two year contract. Two years is too long to be tied to one provider if you aren't happy with the service. The market changes too fast....

That's true, but I also think that long before the first year goes by, you have to have a pretty good idea if you like the service or not. So if you like the service, sticking with it for an extra year is not a big deal. However, if you don't like the service, you would know it before the first month so if you have a one year contract you are stuck with it for 11 months more so a 1 year agreement is still bad if you don't like the service.

I still would say that 11 months is better than 23 months.

A little money up front goes a long way

Edit: Plus someone just might still want to buy your phone After 2 years forget it!

Being locked in to any term can be bad, but things like CS issues and network capacity issues may or may not come up in that first year. If you're in a one-year deal, in month 13 you can bail if you need to.

Don't forget you can always buy your way out of a term commitment. Of course you usually need $150 or $175 to throw away on a two year (prorated to the month you buy out. At least in my state.) It used to be much more, but the attorney general here went after the carriers and won.

I agree with you guys...11 months is better than 23. I am just raising a different point of view in which sometimes depending on the case it is not so bad to go with it for 2 years or it may be just as bad with just 1 year. After all, 11 months of dropped calls and lousy service is unbearable. In fact, by the end of the first year you may be used to it already .
