That's one way. More common is to have the ILEC put in (multiple) DS1 circuits between the cell sites and the MSO (switch). These circuits can be carried on copper wire; or via optical fiber (SONET rings) from a central office terminal to a remote terminal, then via copper. A DS1 carries twentyfour 64 Kbps DS0 channels, or 1.544 Mbps. With 9 to 14 Kbps per voice channels over the air interface, you'd be able to more than one call through a DS0. Of course, all of these DS1s get delivered to the MSO together as DS3s (28 DS1s together), and larger aggregations. COtech

On a cell phone, that's the standard. That means you can put more than 24 conversations on a T1 (DS1) line. (As suggested above, a DS1 circuit carries 24 channels).

However, a T1 can carry far more than 24 calls depending upon what technology (CDMA,GSM,etc..) you are using. Having 24 DSO's (time slots) doesn't mean you only have 24 voice channels to work with.
