I expect to move to Iowa City in mid-July, and welcome advice about which company to go with, Verizon, USCellular or Sprint. Not a heavy cell user, but do want it for my cross-country trek to Iowa, might use it as my office phone, for a part-time psychotherapy practice in Iowa City, and for some of the night and weekend time, if that includes long-distance calls (can anyone clue me in). I find the plan explanations inadequate. Your thoughts, suggestions are most welcome.

There is another string on Iowa City Options that you might find useful. I would consider myself a disgruntled Sprint user, so take my advise with that in mind although I think that you'll find my comments in line with other frustrated Sprint users, especially in the Iowa City area. I am a student at Iowa, and when all the students come back in the fall, you might as well use your land line. The towers can't handle the call volume. You'll get repeated messages that your outgoing call can not be completed and to try again later. After hitting re-dial about a million times, my calls have been frequently dropped or the signal is so bad that one party can't understand the other. Incoming calls are usually directed straight to my voicemail without my phone ringing. I usually get notification of a new voicemail within a few minutes but have had no notification for up to 2 hours. Then, you have to go through the hair-pulling task of trying to call your voicemail, which results in the same problems as any other outgoing call. I'm also having problems with the Samsung N200 phone. It is always going in and out of service in areas that are covered by Sprint. So much so, that Sprint ended up giving me a new N200 phone. So far I am having the same problems. I have been looking at other services in the Iowa City and Cedar Rapids area. When I can't make a call with Sprint, I usually end up using my girlfriend's US Cellular phone with no problems. I've looked at US Cellular, Iowa Wireless, SunCom, and a few others but nobody wants to cover Minnesota, where I travel from time to time. I think that I will be going with Verizon Wireless once I can afford the Motorola v60. They have very good coverage in Iowa and are not tied only to the interstates. They cover Minneapolis, as well as Chicago which some other services don't. |

Anonymous, I recently tried Sprint PCS and I don't really know if for sure its the local network or what but I had problems with the SamSung N200. The phone seemed to signal jump a lot and I also noticed that some calls went straight to voicemail with it when it was picking up a signal. I've heard of problems with SamSung's too at least on the signal issue, you really might want to get another phone and see how it works for you. |
