I have a problem that I hope I can get some feedback on. I am just coming out of a 2-year contract with Sprint(yah!!!!) and am looking at moving my cellular service. I live in Omaha and have my choices narrowed down to AT&T and Verizon. Does anyone have any advice on what would be a better plan as far as coverage and price. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

I would advise against MCI Worldcom. They are like Tracfone, they don't actually provide the service, but buy minutes from the carriers and then resell them. From what I have heard, customer service is horrible with them.

Its funny that the anonymous poster raised the issue of MCI WorldComm. Just this evening I received an ad from them indicating I was personally selected for immediate approval of service with them. And they were offering a package worth $4,800 for free. How do they figure that? At 40-cents per minute normal rate, they are giving 1000 free off-peak minutes free. I couldn't stop laughing. They obviously pay no attention to the current market offers of their competitors. And the wonderful phone they were offering with this? A cheaper (discontinued) Motorola phone. They must really think we are suckers. MCI: get real! -Kevin |

I have heard lots of horrow stories as well about MCI. I love Verizon's service (and of course I work here as well, so I am sure I am partial to it for that reason also). But I am a strong believer in Verizon as I have worked for two other wireless companies prior to Verizon and have seen the huge difference in customer satisfaction. I work in Houston, though where we have won the JD Power award the last 6 years in a row, so I am usre that also backs up my philosophy that we're the best. I just know that from my experience working here, Verizon (Home of the Worry Free Guarantee) is so much more targeted to customer satisfaction that Sprint PCS and others.

I am a traveler and looking for a service that is not bound by state lines or local areas. I want a service that I can use around the US and Canada without having to spend my whole retirement check on. Many of the services are only "free" if the telephone call originates in the home area. Heck, I can get close to that without having to go celluar! I am looking for a company that has a plan that makes sense. I also need one that will work with the modem in MY PC, not like Sprint and others who require you to not only use their serial port connection but also require you to hook up to THEIR network. I want to have the same freedome that I have with my telephone at home. I know, I am asking for a great deal. :-) But maybe someone can help. |

For "service that is not bound by state lines or local areas" try AT&T or Verizon. Regarding "I want to have the same freedom that I have with my telephone at home," all I can tell you is: It probably will NEVER happen. Welcome to capitalism. If reality met Star Trek, what you'd get is: The captain taps his badge-communicator: "Pickard to Number 1" Network: "Thank you for using AT&T stellar communications, we will connect you now. Would you like video-hologram as well as audio?" Captain: "Yes" Network: "2D or 3D?" Captain: "3D" Network: "We're sorry, but you are in a 2D-only quadrant of the galaxy. Please reorder your transmission." |

What kind of freedom do you have with a landline phone. If your lucky enough that it does not go dead when you need it, because of a down wire of a bad connection, you are paying an arm and a leg for all of the features that you get for free with a cell phone. Freedom is being mobile. I think that someday wireless will be the only phones. If you can transmitt video over the air, you can do more advanced things with wireless phones to make them better. Just wait. I was right back in 1991 when people were looking at me talking on my cell phone like it was something they had never seen before, when I said that "someday everyone will have a cell phone". We are almost there. Verizon and AT@T are very good choices. Cingular would be better because the caller id and voice mail indicator won't stop working when you cross "THE LINES", at least most of the time. Not sure who is the best as far as data?

I would definitely say Verizon is a better choice for now. The price is better, as Verizon now offers 3500 weekend minutes on their national plans, and AT&T doesn't. In addition, Verizon has greater coverage, and CDMA voice quality is much better than AT&T's TDMA. Congratulations on ending Sprint service!

Hi Halman, Actually, MCI WorldCom resells a number of different carriers' services, depending on the area. In northern Calif., they are known for reselling Verizon. WorldCom has also admitted to reselling Cingular and various others. I would think this poses an accounting nightmare for them, but then, that's their problem. Kev PS Why are all the new members wearing bags over their heads? Hyperventilating? :-) |

Have you looked into Suncom PCS? They have recently been purchased by AT&T. They have a Canada add-on... kwsca |

I agree about WorldCom. I just cancelled my service with them. They have the worst customer service I have ever experienced and god forbid if you ever have to ask them a question. They are clueless about their own services.
