Default Sprint In Iowa

I am not a Sprint customer, however on the I-35 corridor on the new maps has been downgraded to IS-95A signal and not 1XRTT??

Possiblies
Upgraded to 1XRTT and a was mistake
Has not been upgraded to 1XRTT and was going to, but now its not for awhile
Upgraded and decided to switch bases stations with another area and was downgraded (Highly unlikely, but possible)

Wanted to find out what was the mistake??
I emailed sprint, and they said to call customer service. Call CS and they did not know??? The person I talk to really did not want to help me since, I am not nor in the near future will become a Sprint PCS customer.

Does anyone know about this??

I'm not sure I understand. What do you mean by a IS-95A signal?

IS-95A is "regular" CDMA digital and 1xRTT/CDMA2000 would be the 2.5G/3G (depending upon who you ask) version.

This isn't really the sort of question anyone at CS would know how to answer...perhaps a high level network tech might. Since I never looked at the old maps I can't answer for sure, but I can take a guess. The I-35 corridor is probably a SPCS affiliate market. They may have falsely reported their conversion completed, they may have intended to upgrade and fell way behind, or it could simply have been a mistake on the previous. I highly doubt there was a downgrade though.

Interesting. I've never heard of it described like that before. Obviously I've heard of 1xRTT/CDMA2000 many times.

You can see on the website old map fall 2003 on small icon that it is PCS Vision ready 1XRTT when you click on map it shows the new one zip code for Des Moines Downtown 50319.

Map I got at Christmas time showed it being 1XRTT ready and another looked to be older was IS-95A I saw at Best Buy in Des Moines.

I'm surprised that all of Sprint's coverage is not 1XRTT ready by now. I heard that it had all been converted over.

I also thought that all of Sprint's was converted, but if that is an affiliate market it may not be.

Default Sprint In Iowa

I feel like I'm letting down this thread because I can't answer your question. (I'm a Sprint user since December 1998.) Though most of my travel is along I-80, a few weeks ago I drove from Des Moines to Waterloo on I-35 and then U.S. 20, but I wasn't paying attention to data. I think I would have noticed had I lost data. I had no service east of Iowa Falls, but that is besides the point. Are you looking to help someone with data in north-central Iowa, or just curious? I'll be making a trip up to Minneapolis in the next month, so I'll pay attention then.

Iowa is an interesting area in the wireless world because of the number of providers (Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Nextel, U.S. Cellular, Midwest Wireless, Cellular One, and Cricket and Alltel in Council Bluffs) and affiliates (T-Mobile: i wireless and Sprint: iPCS, Swiftel and Qwest) that are located in Iowa, even though Iowa only has a population around three million. As far as I know, the only market owned by Sprint is the Des Moines/Ames market. Everything else is affiliate owned. I don't keep up with the improvements by Sprint in Iowa because, quite frankly, there have not been many. The Okoboji area is the only Sprint area added in the last two years. And that area already has data.

I'm pretty sure that the affiliates were required to convert all of their markets to 1XRTT by sometime this year.

Would this be true for iPCS given the contract and legal difficulties between iPCS and Sprint Corporation? I know that I-29 north of Omaha until coverage breaks south of Sioux City does not allow Vision-based data, unless they converted since I was there in mid-March. (The maps still show this area as additional PCS service. These maps have been updated in the last month when the availability of Vision was added in the Okoboji area, just southeast of Worthington.) iPCS also expanded coverage in Nebraska beyond the Omaha-Lincoln corridor. I don't know, but I would posit that if iPCS and Sprint were having contractual troubles, Sprint may not hold this particular affiliate to the same standards. I will keep you updated on when Vision arrives along I-29.

I was going to suggest this. It could be the cause of the delay. There are also places in Ohio where I think Horizon PCS (if that's the bankrupt one) has not converted either.

Sprint had all of their markets converted back in summer 2002. That's pretty sad to hear the affiliates are so far behind.

They can't really take them back because they never owned the affiliate to begin with. Sprint would have to outright purchase the affiliate.

The license has their name on it not affiliate; buildout is done by affiliate so the affiliate owns the network. I can see if push came to shove like it did back in my hometown with Verizon. Sprint would win since they own the license for the area. I don't know how much power they have, but I know this if Interstate 35 telephone company who own 51% and Verizon 49% of the B Block Cellular where we are in disagreement, and I-35 fired Verizon from servicing the area. I would think Sprint could do something similar if things were going sour in a market no PCS vision or towers not going up??

From what I hear from Dan, Sprint should really try and figure out what to do with affiliate Horizon PCS. They aren't building out anything new and their web site news hasn't been updated since 2002. I used to get replies when I wrote to them but they no longer answer any e-mail. Sprint needs to do something about them and/or try to buy them out.

Only some markets are served by affiliates. The largest cities are not. Where are you located?
