Default Alltel is buying out Cellcom in WI

I confirmed this on Thursday when I cancelled my Alltel service. I really enjoyed having Alltel but suddenly my cell # was long distance and they couldn't give me a local one. After speaking with several people one of them did inform me that in Feb. or March their acquisiton of Cellcom would be complete. It's good news for those of us up here that would like a non-renegade CDMA carrier. I asked the first few Alltel reps I talked to if such a thing was going to happen (some things kinda pointed to it) and none of them had any knowledge of it (or were lying.) In the meantime I signed up with Nextel. Once I had the Nextel I called Alltel to cancel (who let me out of the contract early because of the number snafu, can you believe it?) and they told me of their plans. It's too bad - they were a dollar short and a day late. If Nextel doesn't work out I'll be back.

I'd like to hear from people who might know anything more about this.

Default Alltel is buying out Cellcom in WI

Ya... the loss of reverse toll billing has been a pain for us here. Luckiky we have local numbers for the entire area but people have been EXTREMELY upset about changing their phone numbers. Even though it's not necessarily Sprint's fault (landline here) they sure have some angry customers and I'm sure have lost a record number of landlines in the area recently.

Has anyone else heard this rumor? It would be a logical one if you look at the area served by Cellcom.

I stopped in the Alltel store a couple weeks ago, and I asked them if they would ever cover Green Bay and northeastern WI, and they said "Only if we buy someone out, which PROBABLY won't happen." As much as I'd like to see Alltel buy Cellcom, the guys I talked to didn't seem to think that would happen.

Alltel has network in Green Bay. The problem is, it is not built for customers to use at this time.
It's Alltel choice if they want to buildout the PCS network so customers can use it.

I'm beginning to think that Alltel would prefer to put all their eggs in the 700 MHz basket, instead of spending any money on their PCS frequencies that might be better sold off. If Alltel loses out iin the 700 MHz lottery, maybe those PCS frequencies will be an ace in the hole.

Wow. I totally had no idea that Alltel had any 1900 Mhz licences. I thought they were completely cellular! Shows how much I know now!

Yeah they have a few small pcs markets. But like VZW they prefer the cellular 800 band....

OT - VZW doesn't have cellular (850) in WI. USCC has most of the 850.

Yeah which is part of the reason why their coverage is lacking, especially in places like michigan (except detroit area), i'm sure vzw's network in wi isn't much better.

IMO i prefere that the most ly 850 companies use 1900 instead of no coverage at all. If Alltel had some PCS it could at least bridge some of its rural to metro gaps.

I have some 1900 area that suck compared to my 850 areas but Id rathing have something vs nothing.

Yes, VZW's coverage in WI is terrible except in the Milwaukee area.

I have to disagree, in my area the only way I would have useable signal on my Verizon phone was to force it to USCC, which is easier said than done on anything but a LG phone. USCC is the roaming partner and if VZW had no coverage, instead of a non-useable one, any phone would automatically switch to USCC and we would be good to go.
