Default Alltel is turning on more Digital in Michigan's UP

A friend of mine told me that Alltel turned on Digital service in Houghton today. Service went down for about an hour this morning and when it came back on it was digital. It was much needed there since there are so many college students with cell phones from all over the country. Markette has already had digital for a couple months.

It is, indeed, now on in Houghton (it was turned on yesterday, 10.9.03). This is per my tel. conversation with Alltel's Houghton MI store.

I hope they get it all up and running, I am going to be visiting a friend who lives in Stephenson, MI late this month, now the question is, is Verizon going to make that part of the AC map?

Good question. Probably not anytime soon because I was up in Houghton during the end of July when I still had Verizon, and Alltel was the prefered roaming carrier in that area even back then when it was anolog. So Verizon has been using Alltel there for a long time and it's not part of AC.

The strange thing is that Alltel uses Verizon where ever possible, and it is not the other way around, at least not yet. I am happier as an Alltel customer then I was as a Verizon customer because I get Mobile Web and all the features whether I am in Detroit or N.E. Lower Mi, where Verizon would roam on RFB's CellularOne without features or even voice minutes without roaming.

I can't understand what the problem is with ALLTEL and Michigan... In general VZW treats ALL ALLTEL markets as Extended Network, except for some areas where VZW and ALLTEL compete with each other (and even in those markets, customers on AC plans who roam on ALLTEL are often not charged roaming.) Worse, VZW phones with current PRLs show "Extended Network" in areas of MI where roaming is being charged!

Hopefully VZW will fix this mess soon...
