Default QUESTION: Will AMPS eventually go away completely?

For me personally..........it's actually still very important.

I have Verizon Wireless and a LG VX4400 and since I have family in South-East KY, AMPS is the only thing that works for me down there. It's Roaming, but I don't use my phone a whole lot when I'm there anyway. But it's important for my phone to work wheather I'm gonna use it or not.

So..........how much longer would you say AMPS will definently be around?

Thanks.

I think the FCC mandates until at least 2007.

Verizon is going to have digital coverage in all amps areas shortly. most other companies and towers which ahve analog only will add digital but not get rid of analog. the technology will still be avalible as sort of a safety net, but digital will be avalible everywhere analog is so there will be no need for it.

Eventually will get rid of analog but it must stay till at least 2007 like the above poster said. There are still devices that run on a analog cellular network one example is onstar.

I believe that VZW will acquire Bluegrass, Ramcell, and Appalachian by 2007 (or at the very least those three will have made amends with VZW.) The KY problem is a BIG one for VZW...

Like Jack said, GM's Onstar system uses AMPS and will continue to for a while. I just talked to Onstar technical assistance a month ago about the conversion to digital ( assuming CDMA due to current service through VZW ) and they still only know that it is in the works, but no info on it's release. That being said we will not see it on the 04 models roling out now, so the soonest it could be out would be for 05 models, and I dont think GM is going to put something out that will only work for 2 more years.
