Western Wireless? I'm a little confused, they used to be TDMA, then converted to CDMA. Are they also building GSM/GPRS systems?

Buick, Yes. WW will be analog, TDMA, CDMA and GSM on their 800 MHz channels, and GSM on the new PCS channels they're buying from T-Mobile. Currently they support analog, CDMA and TDMA on most of their network. -Bill |

Wow that's quite a mix of technologies they have to deal with. Why make themselves so complicated?

I honestly think that it's a great strategy. They'll have no enemies, and every company will have an opportunity to roam on some of their towers, bringing them in a ton of money.

bobolito, This is an interesting part of the agreement. WW is going to buy 1900 MHz (PCS) spectrum from T-Mobile to add GSM service. Is T-Mobile giving up this spectrum because they can't afford to build it themselves? And will this spectrum be in areas where WW already has service, or will it be in new areas for WW? T-Mobile has already built in most larger cities, and the list mentions states where WW already has a presence, so I would suspect the former. T-Mobile, nee Voicestream, was formerly owned by WW, so there may still be friendly connections between the two. It appears as though WW would only install GSM service on 1900 MHz channels initially, as that would most readily benefit T-Mobile, who has few, if any, 800 MHz/1900 MHz GSM phones in use. Since t-Mobile is providing the spectrum, I'm thinking Cingular is just contributing some bucks, and is just going along for the ride. Cingular has been desperate for spectrum in the non-coastal west. They have only been able to partner with AT&T who also has licenses in these areas. -Bill |
