Default Cell Phone Modem

I want to use my cell phone as a modem while traveling in the western states. I have a Nokia 5165 and an Ositech King of clubs card in my PC.
I am not having any luck so far in making this work. I use ATT as the provider. Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can make this work, short of using a satellite phone?

When you say 'western states' it's unclear as to which states you mean. Specifically which states will you be visiting? If you are in a populated area, your best bet for mobile data will be to use Verizon Wireless, as the only equipment necessary for this are a phone and data cable. It's slow. Only 14.4kbit. But it has no additional charges, other than airtime fees.

This only works in native Verizon Wireless coverage areas, with digital service. In the western states, it can be hard to find Verizon digital.

The 5165 dosn't have that capability, its to old. AT&T dosn't offer that type of data service, only M-Life for phones. Hopper is right! Verizon is the best for modem use.

i think people would/can help you more if you define to use what you mean by "western states" because basically this means everything to the west of the mississippi.....maybe if you can give us a region or some states that you travel to...

I am happy to report that I have found the solution for this issue.
Yes, you can do this with a Nokia 5165, using the Ositech King of Clubs trump card and software. And YES, I am doing this via AT&T with their Digital One Rate plan. Using the Ositech software, the 5165 can be forced to search for the Analog connection regardless of the area. This essentially means that as long as there is an Analog signal regardless of who's network, I can still communicate.

This works great when traveling by RV.

Although I have found a solution, let me clarify Western States.

I am referring to most Midwest States west of the Mississippi. Specifically, Colorado, Kansas, Montana, etc.

I am glad you found a way to get it to work. I for got about using a analog signal for data in the older phones.
