I was just wondering about Cingular's GSM network. I've recently considered getting a plan with Cingular (After hearing about the new towers), but everytime I enter my zip code, which is 49760, it tells me they do not have coverage in my area. Anyone know anything about this? It's very puzzling.

Yes, Cingular Wireless is not there in the western UP. The roaming coverage on their map is supplied by Dobson Communications, selling under the Cellular One brand name. Here a link to their coverage map. COtech

There are only two cellular companies selling service in the UP of Michigan. Once is Dobson (as someone else mentioned) and the other is Alltel.

Cingular Wireless Expands Coverage in Northern Michigan and Upper Peninsula DETROIT, Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Cingular Wireless, the country's largest wireless provider, announced that it has expanded its ALLOVER(SM) Network with new GSM coverage in northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. A new agreement with Dobson Cellular Systems brings nearly 70 new GSM cell sites to customers of Cingular Wireless. Cities that are part of this expansion area include Escanaba, Sault Ste. Marie, Marquette and Iron Mountain. "We are excited to announce the addition of these key areas of the state to our coverage portfolio," said Brian Ducharme, Vice President/General Manager, Michigan/Indiana. "This network expansion provides customers who travel to the northern part of the state continuous access to Cingular's full suite of GSM voice and data technology." The agreement follows the August announcement of a $60 million capital investment throughout the state of Michigan to enhance and expand Cingular's ALLOVER(SM) network*. The network enhancement will enable Cingular customers in northern Michigan to experience the highest level of voice service quality and some of the most advanced data services. Customers in these areas will now be able to use their phones to get to access the internet for driving directions, weather and sports updates or to access email and send picture and text messages. Cingular customers will have access to some 45,000 cell sites nationally by the end of 2006. The company already offers customers access to the largest digital voice and data network in America, and Michigan is an important part of that network.
