Hi, Anyone knows what frequency Cingular operates on in Illinois? Do they use 1900? I'm still in contract with Cingular but wish to be able to use my triband 900/1800/1900 from overseas. When I insert my current Cingular SIM into the new phone, the signal is received some time and not some other time (very unreliable) Thanks |

The vast majority of Cingular's Illinois coverage is on 850 MHz. You'll see some 1900 MHz in cities and on major highway routes--this is the former ATTWS PCS system, now part of Cingular. You REALLY need a 850/1900 MHz handset. You could keep the Euro tri-band for urban use. I expect Shizam76 will offer a more detailed answer, since he is an Illinois dweller. COtech

Normally the only thing you really need for the US is a decent GSM 850/1900 handset (between 50 and 100 bucks depending on the brand, where you buy and what features you can do without). That won't stretch your budget too much.

Thanks a lot for all your replies. It would be nice if I can use my new Euro-triband here (as it's a gift) but I guess I'll just stick with my current Cingular cellphone ... Thanks

You can use it but you won't get the desired coverage as you would with a GSM 850/1900 capable handset.
