...is a lovely sight/site I saw this afternoon in downtown Los Angeles. A couple of tower dogs putting on new panels for Verizon and MetroPCS at an existing AT&T site. The guy in the bucket isn't hooked to the bucket. If he falls, he falls only once. jlk PS: TONIGHT: Dateline - NBC - Tower Dogs

Is this the site by the 110 freeway next to Staples Center? I though Verizon had been there for years. Or are they just swapping/upgrading the antennas?

To use a common line in the industry... a tower climber's pencil doesn't have an eraser. Sad to see these guys not tied off 100%, I'm a very vocal advocate of taking the time to do the job safely and correctly the first time. I don't care how urgent the need for the work is, it's still just for cell phone coverage and it can wait the extra ten minutes to ensure my life is safe.

How about air-suits for all tower-climbers? Not just safe, but fun too ![]() That should be thier mantra. Good advice.

Images: 18 | I'm confused. To me it looks like the guy in the bucket IS hooked in. It looks like he has two clips--the left one is hooked to the bucked, the right one is "holstered" so he can use it to clip to something else before removing the left one. The guy on top with the flying foot I'm not so sure about.

I have to correct a mistake I made. in the message of the first post I said, in part: I was wrong. Looking at some additional photos I took but didn't post, I saw that he had a second belt that was hooked to the bucket. My apologies. Jonathan |

Images: 18 | No problem... but what about the guy on top? It's not apparent from the pictures, but is he clipped into anything? I'm not sure I recall having both feet in the air as part of being safe!

Not to worry...we were all newbies at one time. As for knowing who is on a particular tower, you have to look for clues, which include the name posted on the equipment cabinets or building. If no name, then a 24-7 phone number to the network operations center (NOC) that can disclose the carrier. Sometimes you'll see an FCC ASR (antenna structure registration) number that you can look up at the FCC's website. As to where it's pointed, most three sector cell sites have antenna beams of 120 degrees, so you simply look at where the face of the panel is 'looking'. In some cases (some MetroPCS for example) they use 60 degree sectors, but the same "look at where it's pointing" routine works. Omnidirectional whip antennas provide full 360 coverage around a site from one antenna. Does this start helping you with the technology? Best regards, and welcome! Jonathan | |
