Default Just in time for Tower Dogs on Dateline...

...is a lovely sight/site I saw this afternoon in downtown Los Angeles. A couple of tower dogs putting on new panels for Verizon and MetroPCS at an existing AT&T site. The guy in the bucket isn't hooked to the bucket. If he falls, he falls only once.

Is this the site by the 110 freeway next to Staples Center? I though Verizon had been there for years. Or are they just swapping/upgrading the antennas?

Yup, Larry, that's the one. Enter off of Washington just east of the 110 Fwy overcross.

I'm confused. To me it looks like the guy in the bucket IS hooked in. It looks like he has two clips--the left one is hooked to the bucked, the right one is "holstered" so he can use it to clip to something else before removing the left one. The guy on top with the flying foot I'm not so sure about.

I have to correct a mistake I made. in the message of the first post I said, in part:

I was wrong. Looking at some additional photos I took but didn't post, I saw that he had a second belt that was hooked to the bucket.

My apologies.

Quite correct, Spleck. I missed it, and added a separate message here acknowledging/apologizing for my mistake. Even lawyers make mistakes.

Yes, it looks like a swap for VZW, and a new site for MetroPCS. The prior monopole at this location is out, and there's a short (temp?) in now. I presume that the short stick will be removed once the new panels are energized.

No problem... but what about the guy on top? It's not apparent from the pictures, but is he clipped into anything? I'm not sure I recall having both feet in the air as part of being safe!

While I couldn't tell for sure, he seemed to be clipped in. I saw him clip off/on as he moved around the top. He gave me a nice thumbs-up a couple of times while I snapping photos.

Sprint is on the southwest "structure"; Nextel is in the middle (needs a paint job); VZW, MetroPCS and AT&T are on the new north structure.

Colo:

Not to worry...we were all newbies at one time.

As for knowing who is on a particular tower, you have to look for clues, which include the name posted on the equipment cabinets or building. If no name, then a 24-7 phone number to the network operations center (NOC) that can disclose the carrier. Sometimes you'll see an FCC ASR (antenna structure registration) number that you can look up at the FCC's website.

As to where it's pointed, most three sector cell sites have antenna beams of 120 degrees, so you simply look at where the face of the panel is 'looking'. In some cases (some MetroPCS for example) they use 60 degree sectors, but the same "look at where it's pointing" routine works. Omnidirectional whip antennas provide full 360 coverage around a site from one antenna.

Does this start helping you with the technology?

Best regards, and welcome!
