I've never seen this thing before. In the attacted picture, if you look at the far right sector, the 2nd bracket in from the left, there is some sort of small antenna thing. It is pointed down at a local shopping strip in a small village. Is this an antenna localized for just this small area? Has anyone seen this kinda thing before?

Could it be aimed at the carrier's own store in the shopping center? Nothing like strong signal to demo phones with. COtech

Could be for the reseller, as we all know PCS isnt the best for in building coverage. It also depends on how far away the building is from the cell site. I have a 1900 tower that is 1/4 mile from a mall and in the middle of the mall my phone will pick up an 850 tower that is 5 miles away versus the 1900 across the street from the mall. The mall is directly in front of the panels on the north side (alpha) of the tower. So in theory is your a 1900 carrier and you lose coverage in building and you have roaming partners in the small town running 850 its possible your phone will go into roaming on another carrier which would be bad in a sales office. |

I've seen these before when used for a donor for a repeater like Cellonetech mentioned. I'll try to take a picture of one I saw the other day.

That almost looks like a repeater to give coverage below the antenna's. It also looks like the diamond repeaters that T-Mobile uses on their towers, but those normally are facing tower to tower & not the ground.

Could it be a weird microwave, to beam that signal at the ground? like a directional antenna..focussing the signal at one particular place on the ground..dont know what else it could be.

The antenna array it is mounted to belongs to iden. unsure what specific purpose it serves, but more than likely it something in the ghz range.

It's probably just a micro-cell to take the extra traffic from the shopping center away from the macro-cell (the larger cell). Otherwise the macro-cell will get jammed up with traffic from the shopping center. With both the micro and macro cell, they can have the micro for the shopping center, and the macro for the wider area.

Its possible, but the larger panels have a higher Gain factor of approx +18 db with a 6 ft panel vs the localized mini direction panel which probably runs +3 to 5 db. If in fact that is iDen that rules out the repeater idea I had because the 800 smr band will penetrate the concrete. I wonder if this is some sort of hybrid Sprint/Nextel site and the small panel is for 1900 CDMA, if there is a dealer near the site they would need CDMA in order to demo the Buzz hybrid phones. I have seen a few dealers and corporate stores use repeaters to ensure full coverage on the sales floor. |
