Default Cool new way to Tower Hunt

So on my new Sanyo M1, the phone has the option to log the approximate lat/long of your location while taking a picture. Well, since I have discovered this feature I have been playing around with it a little bit. What I found out is that the location it gives me is the EXACT location of the tower that you are currently in communication with.

That is great news.
So let me make sure I am understanding correctly- when you are in camera mode taking a picture, your phone shows you the coordinates of the tower you are connected to in order to give you an "approximate" location?

Not exactly. Once you take a picture and save it, the lat/long data is stored in the picture info that can be accessed after it is saved.

Ah, got ya. That is awesome though I have to say. This is an easy way for you to map out the location of the tower you are connected to wherever you are- I'm just thinking about my recent trip to rural Utah where I was connected to a Verizon tower 70 miles away...The "approximate" position would have been just a little off, lol.

lol. I tried this roaming on Verizon and it didnt give me the location data, which is a bummer. It seems odd that this is the way it approximates the location. Maybe these 4 attempts, my phone wasnt able to triangulate my location.

Well those phones are able to approximate your location more exact than just getting the location of the cell site- I mean there are tons of location based applications out there that are almost exact to the foot. Not to diminish the fact that it's great how the phone gives you the location of the cell site.

Yeah, I use telenav all the time, and that is accurate down to the foot. BUT, that also uses a data connection and real satellite GPS to get a fix on the location. This would drain a lot of battery juice every time someone takes a picture.

You are right- I didn't take that into consideration. For now, though, this seems like a step in the right direction- I'm sure most people wouldn't even understand the coincidence about the locations each time they take a picture that it shows the location of a cell site.

Well it took me a while to figure out at first why the location was off by at times up to 2 full miles. If only I had this feature on while I was back home.
