Default Irvine, CA Planning Commission Approves Neat Telebarn Site

Last night (7/6/06), the City of Irvine, California Planning Commission voted 4-0 to approve a major new 5-carrier co-lo site near the intersection of SR133 and SR241 (the Lambert Ranch property). The carriers joining together to create this unique project are Verizon Wireless, Sprint Wireless, Cingular Wireless, T-Mobile, and Nextel. The Planning Consortium (W. Dean Brown and group) served as the lead telecom planners for the carriers.

The design of the site is a rustic wood-style barn and water tank. It will be at the top of the Lambert Ranch community development. The telebarn will replace an existing, uninspired 3-carrier site (VZW, Nextel, Sprint) approved by the County of Orange before the area became part of the City of Irvine.

Attached to this post is the City's staff presentation. It provides far more detail about what was, and what will be.

This project took several years of pre-planning by the applicants and then planning by the City to reach the outstanding result. This is especially true as the project is being constructed around a much larger major development of new homes, the nearest of which will be less than 130 feet away from the project.

I'm pleased to have had the opportunity to be a member ofthe City's planning team for this project.

Jonathan

At least, not when you spend a ton of cash to appease with design and proffers

That is a nice outcome though. I used to live right there (Northwood). Isn't that right down the road from El Toro MCAS?

Yes! Actually, MCAS El Toro is no more...it's been turned over to the City of Irvine to develop in to The Orange County Great Park. See: http://www.ocgp.org/about/default.asp

Thanks. I knew it was BRAC'ed (sort of my job to know that). I just wanted to test my memory on location of the site. That is great that it is being used. There are way too many abandoned former military sites that aren't being utilized to the potential of the property they once occupied.

Haha, I work for the company that planned and built the city of Irvine. What I find amusing about this company is that it is totally "fashion over function." Vanity is not a consideration; it is a demand.

Wow I almost didn't see this thread.

JK, I thought there was already a tower disguised just like the one at the Irvine Spectrum (can't think of the name of it) at the 133/241 intersection with a number of carriers on it. So why would they need this one?

Larry:

Capacity, capacity, capacity. This site will replace the existing Lambert Ranch site, so for 3 carrier (Nextel, Sprint, VZW) it's a 1:1; for Cingular and T-Mobile is more capacity.

Never seen panels so close to the ground like that. I guess T-Mobile will have the smallest coverage area due to their being at the lowest spot.

Actually, the site is up on a hill. Great RF visibility.
