Default BlackBerrys on "Unsupported" Networks?

I have a BlackBerry 8310 I use with SIM cards from 2 different networks. One network officially sells BlackBerrys, and I can use the built-in BB browser and download attachments just fine. The network used with the other SIM card does not sell BB's, and I can not use the internal BB browser, altho I can use the Opera web browser just fine. Altho it seems when I want to download an attachment, it invokes the BB browser, which in this case I can't use, and hence I can't download any attachments .

...so to make a long story short: is there any way to download files without using the BB web-browser? And networks that sell BB's I assume have some kind of "BES" server to support data? But then why is web-browsing allowed on other browsers, but not downloads?

Why do you have GSM/WCDMA as your providers???? They're not providers they're wireless standards.

BBs need to be connected to a BB server. If a provider has no provisioning for BB with Rim then the BB is only good for calls and SMS. This why when one gets a BB plan a service book is sent. Some providers do aloe the pay per use and do send the necessary service books. Another way one can try is by going via the wap browser and have the apn settings done as per the guidlines of the provider. Setting opera also depends on the apn in settings

I travel alot and have a stack of SIM cards that would fit in a Pez dispenser. Just don't feel like listing them all.

Yea, that's what I did, set Opera to the networks GPRS APN, and I can web browse but not download. I read somewhere else that when using your BB on networks without a BES/BIS server that you can still have basic TCP/IP connectivity. Which is what I guess is allowing me to web browse. But then why is downloading disallowed (ie: forced to use a BES server)?

That is a BB thing. Providers want all heavy trafic to pass via the RIM server instead. The reason for that BB devices optimize the downloads when they pass via the RIM server. Try to download a picture and you will see that a 1MB picture ends up being aroun d the 10 to 14KB size. This is one reason that [I] never bothered taking the international data plan as my international roaming charges never went over $20 per month and I always left the BB on with data roaming. Remember, for email, plain text don't add up to much, like full HTML emails. The compression also holds true for web browsing via the BB browser.
