I have had blackberry's in the past through work. I now have to go and get my own phone and want the full keyboard (for texting) as well as wifi. However, i am being told that starting today i must purchase a data plan or the blackberry plan (depending on the carrier). i dont want the data plan for web or email access. Radio Shack said i can call in the next day and cancel. Does anyone have more info? I would like to purchase from _____________, 8900 is free through tmobile and att. Thanks. |

As far as I know, all the major carriers require a data plan when buying a BlackBerry. AT&T added this requirement last week. Sprint and Verizon have always required data plans. I tried to cancel my data plan on my Verizon 8130 with no luck, so I switched away from my BB. I couldn't believe that even T-Mobile has a data requirement now. If you want a smartphone on TMo or AT&T on your terms, you will likely have to get an unlocked (and possibly unbranded device)... as for me, I bought a new Nokia E63 for less than $200 and I am using a prepaid SIM. I would keep an eye out on the Nokia and Dell websites for a possible deal... this way, you can either get a cheaper data plan (or none at all). |

Also keep in mind, that even when they didn't require the data plan, it was still required for any rebates. In other words, even if they don't require the data plan, you'd probably have to sign up for one to get the phone for free.
