Default Blackberry For Dummies

I'm considering buying a blackberry for a friend who always wanted one but never got one. The problem is that I myself have only a layman's understanding of smartphones and I am not really sure what kind of a phone I should get for him. Personally, I just use a flip phone since I am not a big fan of txting. This is pretty much my stance on the topic a la the Boondocks cartoon YouTube - Nigga Technology.

Anyways, he never used a Blackberry but just wants one for the image, being hipster and all. So any ideas on what to get a for Blackberry noob?

Not sure you would want to get a blackberry for the "image". Keep in mind that no matter what carrier you use, there are extra charges for the blackberry on top of the normal phone monthly fee. That extra charge is for data, e-mail, texting, web browsing, etc. If you are not planning on using any of that stuff then whats the point? I suppose you could just use it as a phoneonly and not pay extra if you don't plan on using it for anything else. But what would be point?

He actually does want those functions. I'm just saying that he wants to use as part of his image more. And as for billing, I'm just buying him the phone for his birthday. The rest is up to him; billing, carrier, etc.

Well you also have to know what carrier your friend wants. Some carriers use SIM cards ( like At&t) and some have to be registered with carriers ( like verizon). So it depends on what your friend has or wants.

He uses AT&T and I was hoping someone could tell me which BlackBerry was the base model for that particular carrier.

Now a days most carriers have an unlimited everything plan, well at least Sprint and Nextel does for $99.99, so that pretty much should give you a ball park figure and how much your friend will be spending every month if he doesn't want to worry about overages.
