Default Contacts on the 8310

When I inserted the sim in my Curve, I noticed all the contacts have the name and a slash with a number. For example Dad/1 or DPW/Sanitation/3. I have no idea what that is, and what else I do not understand how come the contacts do not read the same as it was in your previous phone? Thanks

Joe it could be the way the phone reads SIM contacts. I've had this happen with various GSM phones I've owned. If I have more than one number for the same contact, I see a number added to the truncated end of the contact name. In some cases it's changed depending on the phone I've put the SIM in.

Since your Curve 8310 is the older version, maybe it's a limitation? Is this a new SIM?

Hey Mike, the sim is fairly new. January of last year, do you suggest I get another sim?I had 2 numbers with some of my contacts on the sim with my SE but it does not show that on the BB, so it did not copy them to the phone. Another thing I find, is I created an email account with my Yahoo mail. Yet I do not see all my folders in the account I.E. bill pay, saved emails etc.
And funny every now and again I get a message from mobile email with OZ and some other numbers and letters and it is not in my inbox and I cannot reply to it.
I remember way back when, when I got a Nokia and I kept getting some text starting with that OZ letters and numbers. Charlyee can vouch for that, it was so bad that I could not use the phone anymore.
So I guess I got a lot to learn with this Curve. Thanks for your help Mike.

I don't believe the SIM card is the problem. As far as the contact issue, it sounds like it's the way the BB 8310 reads phone numbers off the SIM cards.

Think of it this way too, the BB OS is unique, especially in the way it manages contacts. There are more fields of information you can use it's almost too much, but for business users it's a necessity. I'm not surprised it isn't reading SIM-stored contacts properly.

As far as the Yahoo! mail issue, I can't help you there as I've never had a BB before, but again the 8310 is the old Curve model, so it may not handle all these new web-based e-mail accounts very well. This is just a guess, though...

Mike, the 8310 is the current Curve model carried by AT&T, The 8310 replaced the 8300, maybe that's the "old Curve model" you are thinking of.

I guess I was thinking the current Curve version was the 8330. I get confused sometimes with BB's numerical designations...

Now I get the Curve's numbering system:

Quote:
BlackBerry Curve 8300 - Wikipedia

As is customary for BlackBerry devices, the 8300 series consists of several models offered by different wireless providers, supporting that provider's network along with specific services. The base 8300 model is a GSM/GPRS/EDGE handset, to which the 8310 adds GPS capability, while the 8320 excludes GPS but includes WiFi connectivity. The 8330 instead operates on CDMA2000/EV-DO networks and includes GPS; the 8350i operates on the iDEN network and includes GPS, WiFi, and push-to-talk functionality.

Lol Mike, glad you posted that. I believe the 8310 is AT&T, 8320 is T-Mobile, 8330 is Sprint & 8350i is Nextel, true?

Ofcourse RIM is not the only one, Palm is just as confusing with their Treo 6xx, 7xx, 8xx, etc.

Ok Joe, no yelling at me for derailing your thread, Mike started it.

I won't but is this about helping me or the importance of the model numbers?

I am slowly getting ready to give of on this BB, everything I do it fights me every step of the way. As much as I hated the touch screen on the iPhone, I never had as much trouble setting up the iPhone as I am with this BB.
Unfortunately I bought it off e-bay so I am stuck with it until I cam work out the bugs, if not than it will be a nice paperweight for my desk.

You should not have any trouble setting up a BB.

Even though you bought it from E-Bay, it is brand new & AT&T branded; before you decide to give up, you really should give AT&T a call. If they cannot help they will ask you to call RIM. If it turns out to be a defective unit, it should have the normal 1 year manufacturer's warranty, RIM will either repair it for you or replace it.

Good luck buddy.

Are you using Desktop Redirector, or did you install that when you installed the BB desktop software? If so the messages you are seeing are from that. You should set up your e-mails at the AT&T BES site here https://bis.na.blackberry.com/html?brand=mycingular to get those messages to stop you will need to uninstall the desktop software and re-install it and NOT check desktop re-director. BTW you might want to download the latest Desktop software, I do not think re-director is included anymore in newer versions.

I agree with another post regarding why the contacts from the SIM card look funny. That is the fields from the previous model phone do not line up correctly with the BB device software so that is why things are off.

Here is a laugh for you, those mobile email OZ messages were an email alert from mobile email. I had to put my sim back in my SE and go into my mobile email accounts and uncheck alert for new emails, that solved the problem. Thanks Paul What else I find odd is the phones memory will not hold any music, I either lose the bluetooth connection or by USB it tells me not enough disc space.
