If I remember correctly, you can turn the phone part of without turning off the device. It's kind of like being in Airplane mode.

Here's a link to a site which has the PDF user manual for the 7230: Blackberry 7230 User Guide PDF (If you don't already have it, you'll need Adobe Reader to view the manual).

The Phone info part beginning on page 47 might help you with this problem.

According to PhoneScoop, this phone is 900/1800/1900 MHZ. Since this phone does not have the 850 band, the OP is going to have service problems in his area since AT&T is not using 1900 band in his area and is not roaming on TMobile there. So the OP needs to get a phone that has the 850 MHZ band... or move to an area that has 1900 only service

Usually, if a carrier has 850 AND 1900 (or 850 only) in a given area, the carrier will use 850 much more heavily than the 1900 because of the wider coverage the 850 provides. Thus, service with a phone lacking the 850 band will be spotty at best to nonexistent. How was service with your previous at&t phone?

Now, if the phone is stuck in airplane mode or is not on at all, then it's a different issue.

This is one of the reasons why I'll never buy a phone off e-Bay.
