Does anyone know a fix to the Blackberry auto opening messages. I have had a few people tell me that their 8700 will open mail messages with the phone sitting on a desk untouched. We are using a BES server, but even talking with Cingular reps they are having issues as well. Anyone know a fix? Thanks!

sounds like the blackberrys are not locking themselves? You might want to try that. Under options, Security, General settings, then enable password and the amount time before the unit locks. (first time it will prompt you to create a password) As a general rule if you get a new message and go to the BB right away after being notified the message will be displayed on the screen. And if not "locked the message will be open on the screen. Thats what push e-mail is all about. But if the unit is locked, it will not display the message until the user puts in thier password to unlock it. And until they do the BB will only display an icon on the screen with a number next to it indicating number of unread messages. BTW when the screen locks it displays the owner information. Usually blank or RIMs address by default. You can change that under options, owner so that it displays the owners name, address, phone number, Company Name etc. Or whatever you want it to display. Mine has my name, address, and phone number so that if I were to loose it some honest person might return it too me (yeah right). But without the password they could do nothing anyway. And after the 10th try the unit would disable itself. So if these are corporate owned might be a good idea to set the password to prevent messages from popping up on the screen, and prevent data being seen if lost

We don't have this problem on all of our Blackberry's or not that we are seeing it as a huge problem. I can go with mine unlocked and in my pocket and check it later and have new messages that aren't opened. Do you know if there's any rhyme or reason to why they sometimes do it and sometimes don't? Thanks for your help!

http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...essage+holster Not to knock WA but not a lot of BB stuff here, I have tried to get the moderators create specific subforum for BBs but no luck so far. I spend more time at BB forums than I do here anymore for that reason. Lots of good BB stuff there, and lots of help from other BB users. So you might want to become a member of that forum also.

I really appreciate your help and thanks for the link. It's hard to get some answers for Blackberry's, I mean other wireless devices I have no problem with. But having almost 1,000 employees that have Blackberry's it's hard to know what's going to be thrown at me next. Thanks again for your advice.

Again no disrespect to WA, but not much BB info here. But I will say it is starting to grow. When I first got my BB (had just phones before) there was maybe a post or two. Now seems like some BB users are finding there way here. Thats why I still check WA from time to time

That's the number I call for Blackberry Issues with Cingular. But they directed me to RIM, and RIM was supposed to call me back after they researched the issue. On another note, I have that number for Cingular data but also the number for Alltel data is 866-299-4039 if anyone needs that number. I do find the Cingular group to be by far more helpful with the data products than Alltel.

Anybody else notice how the sales of Crackberries, PocketPC's, and Treo's has quickly expanded in the last 6 to 8 months, used to be rare to see them now they are becoming quite normal.

So is there a setting in the BES server that can be changed so this doesn't happen?

| No. Remeber Blackberrys were originally designed to receive messages and push e-mail, phones came later. So it is doing what it supposed to do.

Now, you can set it so the BB doesn't get messages forwarded to it when it is plugged in, but that is a different story. | |

Images: 5 | It isn't a setting per se. It is a function of the BES having OTA sync, so when it is opened on your desktop it appears as read on your BB. You can control the actions when you delete on either desktop or BB and how it acts on the other side, but I don't think you can control opening....although it has been a while since I played with the BES settings.

I am not familiar with the server as much. Our IT guys handle that side. The reason I am asking is my boss is having a lot of problems with her BB opening emails randomly on her BB without her touching the device. She will go on her desktop later and see the emails opened and not respond because she thought she had already viewed the emails on her BB when indeed she had not. Thanks again for your help.
