Post The discontinued Audio 9900

Well I email Audiovox (UTStarcom) and this is what I got:

Dear agentHibby,

Thank you for your email.

The CDM9900 will be discontinued at the end of Q4, which is the end of Dec. It was only scheduled to be on the market for a short period of time. There have been no reported complaints or issues with the phone.

Please let us know if we could be of further assistance.

Thank you and regards.

I don't know why you would make a phone only for a few months (that was a good phone) unless you were trying to get rid of parts left over from other models??

I was told the 9900 was sold in the Far East for over a year before VZW and Sprint brought it here, so that could account for it's apparent short lifetime in the US.

It's a shame, because it's a great phone. All the VZW stores I asked about it said they sold out their stock within a week or two after it was released.

You can still get them on-line. I know for a fact if enter zip code 60601 - Chicago - they still have them - I just ordered on last Thursday (12/9) should be here today. I live in Seattle area. There was no problem. With new every two, it a free phone!

Good luck!

I just called the Verizon 1-800-2-JOIN-IN number and I ordered my 9900. It was not on the website nor at the local Verizon store, but the customer rep said they had them in stock. I should be getting it early next week.

Good for you! I've had mine for a few says now. The inside display is really second to none. large, crisp and clear! It is a very good phone. call retention seems better than my LG 4400. The menu system is not quite as clear of the LG (though maybe because I'm use to that). The camera is much better than I expected, actually. my wife has moto 265 and nephew has moto 710. Neither one is this good. Start-up is mere seconds 2-3 compared to the 10 sec for many phones. These Toshiba phones are top notch.

If you want accessories go to www.accessorygeeks.com. They will save you money. Enjoy your phone

I agree. My brother has a moto 265. Not even close in picture/screen quality.

SO GLAD i bought mine the day it came out in NYC. The longer I have it the less tempting a new phone is. There is nothing Verizon carries now, or will carry any time in the near future that I like as much.

The FCC approval was August 2003. There was a great deal of uncertanty surrounding Audiovox itslef and Hyundai curicell so i imagine VZW ered on the conservative side.

The 9900 was made by Toshiba. Since Toshiba still makes the 4050 for Sprint I think they could have continued the 9900 if VZW wished. My take is that VZW wanted to sell the new series EV-EDO phones on the horizon then, and the 9900 was the hot seller that was cutting into the sales of the other brands in stock.

From what I heard the 9900 sold very well. It sounds like UTStarcom wanted to end it since it was done by Toshiba not them.

Hence what I said about uncertainty between Audiovox/UT Starcom/Hyundai/Toshiba.

VZW just needs to pick up Toshiba as a Manufaturer. Thats all.
