Angry Verizon Crippled their 9900's! No way to upload ringtones!

Verizon in their infinite greed has saw we have found ways to put pics/ringtones onto their phones and not use their GET it NOW service. Well no BitPim/GAGIN or any other software out now will let you find where the ringtones are stored! They have hidden them and somehow locked the phones file system to not allow access to it. We need to band together and crack this thing so we can actually use OUR OWN phones the way we please.
Any ideas of how we can do this?!

That was one of the things I didn't like about VZW. They GIN services suck the big one. I actually wouldn't mind using GIN if their ringtone services were good. I hated all the sites they had contracts with. For example, I like the song "Nelly feat Kelly - Dilemma". I liked it for my ringtone. However, none of the sites that had the "Dilemma" ringtone had it sounding right or good. All the "Dilemma" ringtones I found on GIN had all these extra sounds within the ringtone that made it sound crappy. The only site I found it on was www.pimptones.com Of course VZW doesn't use them. All the ringtones on VZW's GIN sound bad, crappy and they don't sound like real poly ringtones. It's all BS.

Age wise, I am probably one of the senior members of this forum. I am very happy with the ringtones that came with my phone. I just want a phone that can make calls and let me know when someone is calling me. None the less, I think the action by Verizon, to force users to use GIN is deplorable. We are all spending a lot of money for our service; I think that Verizon, should let us get the maximum enjoyment that our particular phone allows without extra cost. Didn't they also, cripple some of the features of the Mot, that was made available 2 months ago?

I for one buy my phone to make calls not for 50 CENT ringtones.

That said, I've always been able to get tones via data cable for free or for cheap on most VZW phones I've owned should I have ever wanted to.

I know a lot of you kids out there like cheap access to tones. Did you know you can text/pix message your phone to get them?

Check out this thread from HoFo.

So let me get this straight. You gave up on Verizon because you didn't like the ringtone features?

The uploading through pic and email msg is good for older phones with verizon, but they caught on and the option is not availible, it is there but greyed out so you cant select it. I could change the setting to allow this but under nam programming the MMS/EMS/SMS Settings has a security code that NO ONE knows, i called Verizon, Alltel, Audiovox I had their senior most techs stumped as to what this security code was. I know its six numbers, but none of the commonly used codes works. I wonder if under those settings it allows you to upload ringtones/pics using data cable? Or at least a min, allow me to email myself pics and ringtones through there pic email service.

Hi,
I don't understand what people are saying here.
I had an LG6000 and I used Thriller for my ringtone.
I had it saved on my computer and when I got the phone(9900), I just emailed the file to the 9900 and it is now my ringtone.

I think, MIF, what they are saying is that they weren't able to do that. Perhaps, if you posted a more detailed account of how you sent yourself a ringtone (ie, which provider you have service with, what browser you used, what e-mail client, what kind of computer you have, etc.) it would fix the problem and MacGyver1 would be able to circumvent Verizon's locking of certain handset features and download the ringtone he wants to his phone.

Update about the 9900 issue. I was trying to send the ringtones I bought from Get it now to my wifes phone using the onboard email. This is NOT allowed by verizon and it is greyed out. BUT, emailing yourself ringtones from your computer that you don't get from Get it Now WILL work. I just needed to the correct the address which helped me out a lot. i was using [mynumber]@vzwpics.com instead of vzwpix.com... Oh well, at least I have some downloaded now, but still the whole issue with the DATA CABLE and new file system not allowing people to up/dowload to the 9900 it is just wrong. What a waste, if having the data cable means you can't up/download pics and ringtones without paying verizon for each email...

Considering Verizon Corporate was already sued by RIAA to release information on customers sharing files on songs on their landline service, those protections serve a dual purpose, one they ensure that Verizon will actually make a profit on services they develop and purchase for their network.

And secondly they ensure that you purchase your ringtones from vendors that they authorize, (Vendors that are paying BMI and the artist in the case of "real tones" their royalties.)

BMI and RIAA have pretty deep pockets in ensuring that they get their cut of the pie....and after allot of research they actually deserve it.

Here's an interesting article talking about ringtones....

But I really don't see why we have to pay royalties to RIAA for a ringtone. That's ridiculous. A ringtone is not the same as having the real song. They are not going to lose CD sales because of ringtones. What a ripoff!

I second that one
I think if we did not have the Napster fiasco of 1999-2001 the RIAA would not be like this. It is the music Industries own fault. They should have been pushing for digital downloads with copyright protection in 1997 in my opinion.

Royalties don't just go to a singer. They go to the writer(s) of the song as well. The sequence of notes is copyrighted. Any use of copywrited material is owned by the owner(s) of those copyrights. For example, you can't take a melody and attach your own words to it and publish it as a new song without paying the person who wrote the music. An example of this is when the Beach Boys were sued by Chuck Berry for using his music in Surfin' USA. By the same note, you can't sell a ringtone that uses that music someone wrote even if it's not the same recording they made.

True, but the singers/writers get a small pittance compared to what the record companies keep for themselves.
