If you press the side button the light will come on for however long you have your lcd screen set to be lit (5, 10, 20 seconds). To adjust this, press 6, 2, 3. If you press the button too often in a certain period of time, the phone tries to conserve the battery and the sub-lcd (screen on the outside) won't light the first couple times you press the button. It's useful if the phone is in a bag and keeps getting bumped, but if you need to see the screen you just have to wait.
