Default Audiovox 8900 review (long, wait make that very long)

Hello everyone. I'm new to posting and replying on this site, but have read close to everything written about the 8900. Just a quick note to let you know Shimo, Tony E. and Dru that I have the 8900 (purchased 12/24 from the 1-800#) and have not had any issues previously mentioned by many. I am a gadget nut and will spend hours figuring things out. That must be the educator in me. I am concerened however, with the possible recall I read in this forum dated 1/1/04. Is this another recall, or the same one that some are just now hearing about. Although I have no issues with the phone, and have downloaded many ringtones using pixplace at verizon .com (better than spending the 1.99 to purchase), I do not want to be the only person with this phone for fear ofnot being able to get attachments, proper customer service etc.

Default Audiovox 8900 review (long, wait make that very long)

Steelerfan, welcome to the Audi 8900 club! I am going to try to exchange my 8900 within the next few days for another 8900 since I'm still on my trial period. My phone received some battlewounds from NYE and I just got it about 10 days ago.

I will check to see if it is indeed been recalled. If it has been recalled I think I still might keep my Audi 8900 since I haven't had any problems with it and it has been pretty rock solid.

What do you think of the phone? How do you like it? I noticed your wife has the 4400, so how do you compare the 4400 and the 8900?

WELCOME ABOARD SteelerFan, glad to hear your 8900 is working flawlessly, you know i went into the store yesterday and i was told that the 8900 was recalled, when i asked if it was because of the S/W gltches the guy couldn't give me a straight answer, i hope that Shimo can confirm this for us when he goes to exchange his. so you ordered yours from Telesales? to me it sounds like the ones from the stores are the one being re-called, the fullfillment warehouses should have the ones with the fixed S/W by now, we'll see.

Default Audiovox 8900 review (long, wait make that very long)

Welcome to the Audiovox 8900 family SteelerFan. Glad to hear that yours is working flawlessly. My only major issues with mine are the outer Verizon Wireless Banner, the lack of answer with any key, and the fact that of the 4 or 5 ways you can send a picture message, only one works right now. Other than that as a phone, text messaging device, and internet connection mine is working wonderfully. I have the latesst available software for it in NYC. 20_0.189 so i am pretty good for right now. Hipe you are enjoying yours as much as i am enjoying mine.

Default Audiovox 8900 review (long, wait make that very long)

Thanks for the friendly reception. So far the phone has been solid except for one little thing. When I receive a picture message, I download it. Perfect. Then, when the phone asks me to view it I choose OK and there is a banner on top that states "image 1/1". This is convenient except for there is no pix in the screen, just a blank white background. You can tell there is supposed to be a pix there, but nothing. Then when I choose "menu" and then "pix info" it gives me the properties of the image. Then when I exit the menu back to the original screen where the banner was and pix was supposed to be...voila' there is the image...as clear as day. Hmmm. Like I said , not a major issue, just kinda annoying.
Does anyone else have this?

Default Audiovox 8900 review (long, wait make that very long)

Shimo,
I forgot to include my comparison of my wife's 4400 and my 8900. Her 4400 is slightly larger in size and weight, but not by much. The 8900's antenna sticks up slightly farther which makes the total length about the same. I do like how her phones outer display changes multiple colors when the phone is closed and a call is incoming. My screen is nicer and her icons are more straight forward and non-fancy. The 8900's icons are cartoonish, but IMO not bad to look at. Sound quality is close to equal. Not enough difference to notice without a meter. As far as the speakerphone on the 8900, it is fine when on my desk etc. I would not be using it in my car though. Not that it wouldn't work, but I won't use it there when I have the earpiece. For myself I like the 8900 better, for the same price (which is what we paid) I like the 8900 because it is slightly more customizable. One last thing I noticed. If you purchase ringtones from GetTones the 4400 has many more company choices to choose from. She has 6, I have 2. Interesting.

Right now, I believe the 4400 is more customizable, just because it's been out longer so people have gotten the chance to hack the phone and figure stuff out. Plus the user base for the 4400 is considerably larger than the 8900 so more companies are going to devote time and money into a phone that has more users. That's probably why there are more ringtone companies supporting the 4400 right now. If you use special programs like BitPim or Gagin, you can do lots of customizing of the 4400.

Default Audiovox 8900 review (long, wait make that very long)

Well, I'm back. veryone try not to cry too much. LOL. Anyway, the 8900 iI see is finally on the website for NC (we were probably the last state, we're still the Rip Van Winkle state) but I do not see it in the stores. I've seen and have heard that the 8900 is not sold in stores because of a recall. Do you guys think all this babbage will be over by late January? I would much rather purchase the 8900 through a person than the internet. Maybe I should just go with the 6000. Oh, by the way I know I'm late but welcome Steelerfan.

Default Audiovox 8900 review (long, wait make that very long)

Here's an update to my review:

Battery Life: 3/5 (average)

Battery life is pretty much the standard 2.5-3 hours talk time on a fully charged battery. Using the camera, drains the battery pretty quickly. Also the large LCD seems to drain the battery quite a bit when you are text msging (nothing too bad though.). Note: when you are talking on the phone and charging the phone with the travel charger at the same time, the phone gets real warm.

Reception:

Well I finally have dropped two calls which is not bad considering that I have made 285 calls and I have logged on over 8 hours and 30 mins. I have not had any suprised missed calls with the suprise voicemail indicator appearing which my 4400 did often (the phone would be right next to me and the voicemail indicator would appear and show that I missed a call!!?!?!). I have had to redial only three or four times because my phone couldn't connect to the tower. This is noticable better than my 4400 which I had to redial every so often because it wouldn't connect to the tower when making an outbound call.

Ringer/Vibrate Alert:

This phone vibrates pretty strongly. Almost too strong: I had it on my desk and it vibrated itself off my desk! The vibration feels a little stronger than the 4400 and compares to the Nokia 3390 in terms of strength. I think I've only missed one call or two at the very most because I couldn't hear the phone ring/vibrate.... And that was with the phone in my car's cupholder with the stereo blasting.

Reminder Alert:

Still haven't found a way for the phone to vibrate and beep and remind when you get a txt/voice/pick msg. As of right now, the phone will only beep VERY LOUDLY every two minutes as a reminder or vibrate as a reminder when the phone is in ettiquete mode.

Well I'm still getting use to navigating throught the menus... it's not as straightfoward as the 4400 and is a little tedious. The txt msging system is not as easy as the 4400 and requires a few more keystrokes to accomplish the same thing on the 4400. It's not horrible, but it's not the best design.

Durability:

Well as you may have read, I dropped my phone carelessly on NYE (actually the morning after). I got (or shall I say stumbled) out of the car and the phone fell to the ground. It received some scratches and dings. The plastic casing is prone to getting scratched and scarred just like the 4400. Not as sturdy as the Mortola v60's metal case. The 8900 has average durability for a plastic phone (or whatever material they use). I have noticed a few creaks in the top flip hinge appear.

Im still loving this phone and my 15 day trial period is ending pretty soon and I'm most likely going to keep this phone....unless something so special comes out within the next few days...

Default Audiovox 8900 review (long, wait make that very long)

I'm new here, but have read the reviews and they've been great. I got the 8900 the day it came out, and was slightly disappointed at the time. Since, I have returned it and used my dissatisfaction to get a great deal out of VZW if I sign another contract. So I've tried to get the phone again, but none of the stores in Boston are selling it! I'm looking into getting it online.

My questions are:

I've heard that 8900s bought in S. California DON'T have the "Verizon Wireless" displayed on the outer LCD every couple seconds. I have an opportunity to have a friend buy me one out there and send it to me. It might be worth it, but I'd appreciate any info anyone might have.

Secondly, steelerfan, you hinted that you've found a way to get ringtones without paying through Get it now. I had used Pixplace, but didn't see anything for ringers. Any info would be appreciated!

Thanks!

It doesn't matter where you buy the phone, if you're on America's Choice plan the flashing Verizon banner will show up once you programmed your phone with your PRL/ERI version, the only time where the banner may not show is when you have the local calling plan, or unless you go into the debug menu and delete it.

Believe there was a discussion earlier in this thread about this.

The blinking banner is supposed to be some kind of enhanced roaming indicator, which if you have an America's Choice plan, your phone will show this.

If you have another plan such as a Local Digital plan or something else, you don't need the enhanced roaming indicator. So no blinkiing banner.

So 8900 phones out here in CA still have blinking banners.

I've got until the end of business tomrw. unless something spectacular happens in the next 24 hrs i will be keeping the phone. i sure wish the new audvx and motos would have been on the shelves by now. i got my little "problem" with the phone cleared up. it was my fault, not the phones'. damn rookie.
