I have talked to some people at audiovox and at Verizon because this blinking banner is driving me crazy. Evidently, this is the deal: People with bell mobility don't have this problem because bell doesn't require an ERI on the outside of the LCD. Verizon requires the ERI to be displayed so that you don't have to flip open the phone and answer it to figure out whether you're gonna get charged for roaming. Anyways, I thought up a solution to the blinking banner thing that satisfies verizon's demands for an ERI, and our demands to know what time it is, and who is calling: the outer LCD should look like this normally: Verizon Wireless 10/24 6:58 and like this when someone is calling: Verizon Wireless Joe Schmoe Additionally, if the phone isn't set to "Active Flip", the ERI information doesn't need to be displayed at all, as you can see the inside of the phone before picking up. At any rate, I called Verizon wireless and talked to someone in their technical department and he had this sent in to the programming department as a request for the next update... I'm not sure that's gonna do it... so I'd like everyone who's annoyed with the blinking pattern to call 611 and get this to be a top priority. thanks to all who help! |

That "upgrade" could be a year away. VZW lip service!

Verizon creates software upgrades for their phones quite often so it could be a lot less than a year before we see an upgrade. There is no promise that the next software upgrade will fix this issue, but it is a possibility.

Respectfully: Actually the manufacture is assigned the rewrite of s/w and sometimes they never get released. I.E. the VX 10's S/W

true, but then again if you look at the 4400 they are now on software version 10, I think it started at 4 or something. And that phone hasnt even been out for a year. So I guess it does depend on the phone, and we will just have to wait and see. we can keep our fingers crossed that they will come out with one.

Gideon -- Why exactly do you hate 'Audiovox phones'? Just the look of them, how they work? Thats a pretty general statement with no explanation of why.

I don't mind their style at all. Like the 8500, it's very small and sleek. But what I do hate is the software. For example, if I want to get a number really fast. I have to press about 5 buttons just to get to the phonebook. (IE Down, Ok, Ok, Up, Ok). Then If I want to search for a name, let's say it starts with "M", it'll go to "Amber" because it's the first name with an M in it insead of names that start with M. Then there's the clocks for the backgrounds, it's either a large pixely analog clock or a large, ugly, digital clock. Another think I experienced on some Audiovox phones is that somebody might call me, but I won't get the call. For example, my friend Amy tried calling me one day. She said it kept ringing and no voicemail came up. Then she called me on my home phone. "Why didn't you pick up you cell?" she asked. And I told her it didn't ring. Then I checked my phone, and it didn't say anyone tried calling me. I didn't have a voicemail either because it didn't go to it. I've missed many important calls because of this. Also Audiovox phones feel cheap to me when I hold them. Like the one I have now (8500) creaks and it drives me crazy. So yes, I hate Audiovox. Or Hyundai as it's properly called. Sorry if anybody really likes Audiovox .

I'm not a big fan of Audiovox either, but when you learn how to use them, they are not really that bad. On the 8600, you don't have to push five buttons to get to your phonebook. Just press the find button on the top right of your handset. It goes right to it. As far as voicemail, that is a network feature not necessarily your phone. If all audiovox's did that, then it would be the phone, but mind doesn't have your same problems. I just bought mine a few days ago. I like my vx6000 better, but I just wanted to try something else. I am beginning to agree with you Gideon...I mean i like the form factor of this phone and for the most part it works well, but I am finding to many little things missing. These are things I never even imagined having to look for when buying a phone because I figured every phone would have it (for example the voice dialing only allows you to have 1 voice dial per phonebook entry, thats completely REDICULOUS!) This is my first experience with an Audiovox phone and the longer I have it I must say the more disapointed I am with it.

As for Orioles, sorry you had to experience an Audiovox . My next phone is going to be a Motorola V300 and I don't expect to have probems with that lol.

Matt (orioles150), What phones have multi-voice commands for one entry? That would be a nice feature to have. I have had wireless service for about seven years, and four phones in that time. Three of them were Audiovox. My current one is an Audiovox. Never had a bunch of problems with any. The time I did have problems was a couple months ago. Like Gideon, I had full reception showing, but calls would not ring through, they went to voicemail. After much reconfiguration, and eventually a couple of exchanges, VZW finally determined the problem was with THEIR network. Back to normal good coverage. Go figure. So, maybe I've led a sheltered wireless life, but my Audiovox phones have always worked the way I expected them to work, and with all the improvements to VZW's network in so. cal, I continue to get good service out of them. I have been thinking of upgrading to the 8600, so hopefully the quality hasn't degraded to the point they are no longer desireable items. |

JoeWookie -- I believe most phones have the multiple voice dial for a phonebook entry. I may be wrong about that but I am pretty sure that they have it. As for whether or not you want this phone: I mean this audiovox phone is actually decent, other than the "Verizon Wireless" on the outer LCD screen if you get it I dont think you will be disapointed much. I mean it does everything you need a cell phone to do. It just doesnt do much more. |

| For anyone who's interested, if you have a data cable, you can edit the files in /nvm/eri called binary.bin and binary2.bin, you just have to put spaces where all the characters that spell out "Verizon Wireless" is. DO NOT erase the A and B after the words, I've been told that is a bad idea. And be sure to make a copy of these files before you mess around with them. Unfortunately, this does not eliminate the blinking banner, as it still blinks a blank screen, but at least it's better than trying to give credit to Verizon, it almost reminds me of an advertisement, and I despise ads. I have yet to find a way to actually turn that off, I dont think it's possible without actually editing the software in the phone, I believe Audiovox must make this happen. This means we should all send nasty emails stating how much we hate the blinking banner, at least let it still display the time or who's calling, what sort of moron decided it has to block whatever you are trying to view? Who would ever possibly think that was a good idea?? <sighs> the lack of planning and troubleshooting that goes into products today amazes me.. Rakkur |
