Default Audiovox 8600 Free Ringers Solved!

Props goes out to skywolf from #linuxchat on undernet for getting the MIME types off my phone

Basically all you need is IIS and some Midi files

You can download free ringers I have setup if your on the Bell Mobility Network by pointing your phone to here...

http://216.154.63.158/cell/

It will say Samsung A460 (cause thats what I used to have) but it will now work for your 8600... its a dialup connection so get it while im still connected Otherwise, follow these steps to get your own server going..

If it wasn't 5:45am I would work on the uploading of images but I'll do that tomorrow Night!

EDIT: I couldn't wait and I figured out the BMP thing too! Basically its the same as below, except associate file type is .bmp and content type is application/x-i-tx55c

Using Windows XP (PRO) I did the following..

1) Install IIS on your system (Internet Information Services), you can do this by click "My Computer" and "Add or remove programs" then click "add/Remove windows components" and click "IIS"

2) Next click START then RUN then type in MMC (Microsoft Management Control)

3) When the window pop's up,. Click on File, and then Add/Remove snapin.

4) Click "ADD" and scroll to Internet Information Services, click the "X" and click ok

5) youll now have IIS in your window under the name "Console Root", click the little plus symbol toopen it up and then click on your computer name. A folder will drop down from that that says "Web Sites", Open that one as well

6) Another drop menu will appear that says "Default Web Site", RIGHT click on that and goto properties.

7) Click on HTTP Headers, and near the bottom there will be a button named "File Types" click it

8) A box will appear, and click on "new type" and put ".mid" (without quotes) in Associated Type and put "application/x-a-tx55c" (without quotes) in the CONTENT / MIME TYPE box

9) Keep clicking OK until your back to the "MMC" window

10) Make sure you have "Directory Listings" on

11) drop your midi file (under 6kb's i think) into the c:\inetput\wwwroot\ directory

12) use your cellphone to surf to your IP address.. (Ex. http://127.0.0.1/)

13) Scroll down, pick the midi file you want and use the "save" feature of the phone

You can now goto your menu and change your ring type to your new downloaded midi file!

Default Audiovox 8600 Upload your own Ringers / Images *Solved!*

I tried this and I got an error "The resource type 'txt/html' is not present in the clientacceptable media types set. (then lists my IP address) When I try going to my IP address from a normal web browser it asks for a password. (of which i am not sure what i should put)

If you have any advice ideas on what I am doing wrong I would appreciate it...

added a lord of the rings ringtone and a bmp using same method. bmp doesn't seem to work with what you specified. does it have to be a certain type of bmp?

still having the same problem with the ringtones

Has anyone actually resolved this? I have this problem too. I can access a mid file on my own server and can click 1 to listen to it, but when I try to save it the screen just stays on "Saving..." forever. I can download ringtones from my provider though, so there must still be something missing

I solved the hanging when you press save. The mime types are not correct. Check out http://cholywell.phpwebhosting.com/audiovox8600/#rings for more details.

should this work on any phone? I dont see any reason why it would be specific to the 8600. Im gonna try it now on my 4500 (but i couldnt get it to work on my 8600, so who knows if ill even do it right!)

The process is not phone specific but the MIME types the phone accepts will be. If you get WAP up and running point your phone to cholywell.phpwebhosting.com/wapbuddy/ and select "Phone Info". That will display all the mime type the phone supports.
