Sorry to burst your bubble guys, but as of right now, we're still in the process of hacking the phone with GAGIN and data cables. We haven't found a way to get wallpapers up (haven't even really found the directory yet), but some have uploaded ringers with the catch that you have to buy one from GIN first, then replace it with your own. We haven't found a way to upload new ringers, just replace the ones that you've already downloaded. We're working on it though.

In order to get backgrounds do you have to have the internet on the phone?

First, you need to download the GIN program "Pictavision" from the "Get Pix" menu. Currently, there is a monthly subscription (~$3.95/month with automatic renewal at the start of each new month) or a one-time download that gives you a month of access for ~$7.95 or so. I'm not sure, but there is talk of a demo option on the way that would give you one time access or a day of access, etc. You also need to go to www.dotphoto.com and create an account (it's free). When you download Pictavision, you will be accessing your dotphoto online account to get pictures that you upload to their online servers. Pictavision will require you to program in your dotphoto username and password to gain access. Wallpaper files for the 9500 are 144x158 (width x length) pixels (covering the entire screen from the bottom of the information bar at the top of the LCD (showing the battery meter, signal strength, etc.) to the bottom of the screen; therefore, the very bottom of your picture will be covered by the information bar showing soft key features, etc.). The very top of your photo will also be covered by the idle banner that shows "Verizon Wireless" or "Extended Network." This is only if you have this programmed. Most of us do, but there are some users out there (and I think people that use the 9500 on other providers' networks, such as AllTell and US Cellular) that do not have an idle banner. In order to prevent the top of your pic from being covered by the idle banner, just create a 16 pixel-thick bar at the top of your photo (so that your photo is actually 144x142 in size). I haven't created photos that have a bar at the bottom (so that nothing is covered), so I don't know the pixel size you would need to do this. You upload your pics in jpg format to dotphoto, access your account via pictavision on your phone, and download your photos to your phone. Pictavision gives you two options: save locally and save as wallpaper. Saving locally just saves your pics to a folder so that you can view them later offline using pictavision, but you want to choose "save as wallpaper" so it goes in your "download" wallpaper folder. Finally, you just F28, choose download, and apply your new pic.

PS - The only pics that I actually go through the trouble of creating a bar are those that I don't want portions covered. There are other pics, like one of the american flag and some scenery pics that look just fine with portions covered, so I didn't edit these. I have pics of my family and pet that I edited so no one's face is covered, etc. Also, realize that your on-screen display will cover some things, so you can edit your pics some more to get around this or just turn off the display. Once you start using it, you can figure it out and edit pics to your likings and preferences. Good luck!

PSS - For more info, go to www.cdmangels.com/forum. There are several topics there that cover this stuff, but nothing really more that I didn't type in above.

PSSS - For ringers, you need to either download midi's and create your own, get a data cable and install GAGIN and balpatch8. The kicker here is that you have to replace ringers that you've already downloaded from GIN programs (like modtones and ringster, etc.) and replace them with your personal ringers. Therefore, your ringers will be named whatever the previously downloaded ringer was named. go to cdmangels.com for much more information... just too much to type here.
