Do you already have at&t service? If so, are you eligible for an upgrade? What other requirements do you have beyond just that it's oriented toward "messaging" (i.e. would you like to have a smartphone? Or what other features/capabilities are important to you?)

Personally I like Nokias, so if you are upgrade eligible or not yet an at&t customer you may want to consider the new Nokia Surge or the E71x, although it's a smartphone so it may also be more than what you need. It's in your price range though at at&t's subsidized pricing. They have several other "messaging" oriented phones that are not smartphones which you could also consider.

Check out this link for options available through at&t:

at&t Qwerties

Then let us know more specifically what you are interested in and someone can give you some other thoughts as well as possibilities beyond just purchasing directly from at&t.

If you don't have or want an extension to your contract, you might want check craigslist out with a list of interested phone in your area. Sometime you can get a steal of a deal. For me, I just recently got a $30 Sprint HTC Touch Pro that had no scratches! I just had to drive a little bit over 40 miles back and forth to get the phone though.. hehe.
