Default 2G vs 3G

ronandav says Hi.

I bought an IPhone 3GS and AT&T charges me for 3G service and only supplies 2G in our area. That is not fair. The big corporation takes advantage of the little guy. If they can only supplly 2G, then they ought to have a reduced price.

Hi ronandav, welcome to WA.

If I am not mistaken AT&T charges for data not necessarily 3G data. This is actually the same situation for all SmartPhones, BBs etc.

Is it unfair, probably but since 3G is still being rolled out it would be difficult to differentiate between who is using 2G & who is not.

Hope I made some sense, although that's probably not the answer you wanted to hear.

Enjoy the Forums nonetheless!

Charylee,
Your reply is the same as AT&T. The say if you don't like it, cancel. If you live in a 3G area, you are happy with the service and you pay the same amount that I do, except that I only have 2G. Of course, I could travel to a 3G area to use my phone. what nonsense. I still say that AT&T is unfair.

ronandav, I knew you weren't going to be happy eith my reply . I was just trying to explain that AT&T charges $30/m for unlimited data for all SmartPhones (the plans are different). It is not based on whether the device is 3G or if the area has 3G. So as I mentioned the charge is for data not 3G data in particular.

Did you not know that there is no 3G in your are yet, when you got the iPhone 3GS?

No, I was led to believe that AT&T had 3G in our area. That is not the issue. If AT&T cannot supply 3G in an area, they should have a different rate for what they can supply.

They are charging for the data, not for the speed. If you have a 3G device in a 3G area, then you get a bonus of speed. No company can afford to roll out a complete national 3G network. It has to be done in stages. My recommendation is that if you are truly unhappy, then take the phone back and cancel your service. AT&T has a 30 day period where you can cancel your service with no ETF. Are you within your 30 day trial period window?

I am sure Jay works for AT&T. This is the word for word answer from AT&T. It is still not fair that AT&T charges the same rate for 3G and 2G. Most certainly AT&T cannot roll out all at the same time, but they certainly price their product fairly in the areas they have not rolled out. AT&T says they have no plans to provide 3G service in my area.

ronandav, no Jay doesn't work for AT&T & neither do I. Did it occur to you that you are getting the same answer from everyone because that is the right answer?

I think you are overlooking the fact that AT&T charges for data NOT 3G data . I don't understand why you keep insisting that AT&T charges for 3G data. If you find this in their T&C please post the link to it.

In the meantime you would be better off without a data intensive device if you feel cheated about the rates.

No, I don't work for AT&T, I'm actually a drycleaner, but if you read my profile you'd already know that. I do have AT&T service, and have had them since before they were even Cingular. I have been very pleased with my service.

That really is the only answer... If you're not happy with the service for the price, get out of your contract before you're subject to an ETF (Early Termination Fee). Nobody, especially AT&T, is going to take pitty on you because you didn't do your research before signing up for service, and give you a discount just because its not what you thought it would be.
