Default Horrible AT&T SE MN/SW WI Is this normal?

Second week with the iPhone and I took a trip to LaCrosse WI this weekend. On the way there, I took I90 from Rochester to LaCrosse. Data coverage was slow. I had several blocks of no coverage close to the border. In the city of LaCrosee, I had ZERO NADA ZILCH data coverage at all. The ATT map shows Edge/GPRS. Well, which is it? There is a huge difference between the two. My phone displayed an E so it was supposed to have been Edge. On the way back we took Highway 61/14 and again, the bulk of the way there was zero data and several bouts of no coverage. Is this normal real world experience. Do I have a bad phone? Please, anyone who has been through this area provide feedback.

If you were to draw a line thru wisconsin as the half way point, the southern half is mostly roaming. The Lacrosse area is primarily Served by Einstein PCS.

I spent 2 months at FT McCoy and the coverage was pretty bad.

I agree Alltel has pretty decent coverage there. When I was at FT McCoy all the carriers but AT&T put up temp towers (COWS) on the base.

It's common knowledge that outside of the big metro areas, GSM providers are behind the ball as compared to CDMA networks in overall coverage. This includes high speed data coverage, in which EVDO has been deployed at a much higher rate than UMTS outside of metro borders.

Unfortuneatly, the fancy smart phones are still only as good as they network they ride on...

I frequent I-90 between Rochester and the Winona exit and have no problems with Sprint on the highway or in Winona. But it's true, GSM is not very good in SE Minn...

I am hoping this will improve soon. This shiny iPhone may be heading back to Apple because of the immaturity of the AT&T network in areas that I frequent. So sad
